Target Joins The Mission Continues to Sponsor Nationwide Veteran-Led Community Service Projects this Veterans Day

The Mission Continues and Target to facilitate 13 veteran-led projects nationwide that benefit schools and illustrate that veterans are national assets.

(PRWEB) November 09, 2012

On Veteran?s Day, Target will partner with The Mission Continues to facilitate thirteen veteran led projects nationwide. The day of service will be coordinated by The Mission Continues, a national nonprofit organization that helps post-9/11 veterans transition from military service to civilian life through community service work. These initiatives will benefit Title 1 schools serving at risk-students. These projects combine three of Target?s philanthropic commitments: education, volunteer service and the support of the veterans and their families.

The Mission Continues challenges veterans to serve and inspire in communities across America. They are fueled by the deep belief that veterans are among this country?s greatest assets and through service, both in the military and at home, they have the power to inspire our nation. The Mission Continues does not offer charity; rather, it challenges returning service members to utilize their tremendous skills and leadership in our communities. As a result, veterans are empowered to transform their own lives and their communities through service.

The projects will be held in major cities including: Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New York City, Norfolk, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Savannah, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. Tasks will include painting murals, installing bookshelves, planting gardens, and building picnic tables.

?The Mission Continues is proud to partner with Target to celebrate Veterans Day not just by telling our veterans ?thank you,? but also, ?we still need you,?? said Spencer Kympton, COO of The Mission Continues. Through these service projects, we challenge veterans to utilize their military skills and leadership in schools and their communities, and we impart to the nation that they are local leaders and assets.?

?Target proudly supports our country?s veterans and the men and women who are serving in the armed forces,? said Laysha Ward, president, Community Relations. ?This Veteran?s Day, Target volunteers will work hand-in-hand with our partners at The Mission Continues to strengthen the connection between military and civilian communities through service.?

In recognition of their partnership, Target and The Mission Continues were nominated for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center?s ?Best Partnership Award,? a category in the annual Corporate Citizenship Awards, in 2011. Since 2010 Target and The Mission Continues have brought improvements to 27 schools in military and civilians communities, bringing together more than 2,100 Target and The Mission Continues volunteers in service.

?After I got out of the military, I tried many things, but that service component was missing,? says Boston Project Leader and Mission Continues Fellow, Jeff Hall. ?Through The Mission Continues, I am able to apply my military skills to address issues right here in our community.? After serving 22 years in the Navy, Jeff has been serving a six-month fellowship at the Merrimack Valley Food Bank. Jeff will be heading up efforts to make over Edward Everett Elementary School in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Jeff Hall?s project is just a snapshot of the veteran-led school makeovers happening across the country. Veterans and their families are encouraged to register for this project. In order to find out more, visit The Mission Continues at http://www.missioncontinues.org
