Whirligig beetles inspire energy-efficient robots

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Whirligig beetles are named for their whirling movement on top of water, moving rapidly in and taking off into flight.

While many may have found the movements curious, scientists have puzzled over the apparatus behind their energy efficiency -- until now, thanks to a study performed by a team led by Mingjun Zhang, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace and biomedical engineering, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

"The propulsive efficiency of the species has been claimed in literature to be one of the highest measured for a thrust-generating apparatus within the animal kingdom," Zhang said. "But nobody knew exactly why, so we conducted a quantitative study with experiment support that uncovered this mystery."

Zhang saw the curious beetle as inspiration for developing energy-efficient propulsion mechanisms for swimming vehicles and robots. His team discovered separate leg functions, alternative patterns of leg propulsion, a unique take-off technique and maximizing surface area as key to the beetle's inner workings.

The findings have been published in this month's PLOS Computational Biology.

His team performed a combination of microscopic high-speed imaging, dynamics modeling and simulations to unlock the beetle's secret.

They discovered each of the beetle's three pairs of legs conducts a different function. Their curved swimming trajectories gained energy efficient over linear trajectories by alternating the ways leg propelled. Using high-speed cameras, the researchers observed that the beetles beat their legs in different directions in order to transition from swimming to diving. This provides the force required to alter the angle of the body's tilt and break the surface tension of water. Finally, the swimming legs rely on the extension of "swimming laminae" to increase the surface area and generate larger thrust.

"Nature folds the laminae, or a thin tissue, after the beetle is done moving its legs," Zhang said. "It extends it when it is propelling to generate thrust. The legs may also be oriented at different angles, so that the maximum area is not perpendicular to the direction in which the beetle is moving. I am always amazed how nature does this with the small organism."

Zhang's team looks to nature for inspiration in engineering. By studying the movements of the whirligig beetle, the team is applying nature's principles to bio-inspired swimming and diving robots. He is designing the robots for the Office of Naval Research through their Young Investigator Program award which he received in 2011. The award gives him $170,000 in annual research grants for three years.

Managers delighted their stores sold winning lottery tickets

DEARBORN, Mo./FOUNTAIN HILLS, Arizona (Reuters) - Managers of a Missouri gas station and an Arizona food store said on Thursday they were delighted that they may have handed tickets to the two prospective multi-millionaire winners of a record $587.5 million Powerball lottery jackpot.

The two winning tickets were sold at the gas station and sandwich shop in the tiny farming town of Dearborn, Missouri, about 30 miles north of Kansas City, and the food store in Fountain Hills, Arizona, on the outskirts of Phoenix.

Although the identities of the ticket-holders were not immediately announced, they picked the winning numbers announced at the drawing Wednesday night: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29, and the Powerball number 6.

They will share an estimated $385 million before taxes if they opt to take the prize as a lump sum, or the $587.5 million can be paid out to them as annuities over three decades, the Multi-State Lottery Association said.

Kristi Williams, a clerk at the Trex Mart convenience store in Dearborn, said she and another employee high-fived each other when they learned the morning after the drawing that one of the two winning tickets had been purchased there.

Store manager Chris Nauerz, who was working Wednesday when the lucky ticket was purchased, called the news "shocking." He said the station gets a mix of customers, both locals from Dearborn, population 500, and truck drivers passing through on nearby Interstate 29.

"It's pretty crazy to think somebody locally could possibly be a millionaire and not know it yet," Nauerz said. "And the fact that I may have even handed over the ticket is even wilder."

The popular lottery - which is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands - had not had a winner for two months.

After no one won the top prize in Saturday's drawing, the pot grew by about $263 million to $587.5 million amid a national frenzy to buy tickets.

Bob Chebat, the manager of the store in Arizona where the second lucky ticket was purchased, said customers bought 986 tickets yesterday and that there was a good chance he had sold the winning ticket.

"It's almost as good as me winning," Chebat said.

"People say all the time that I'll throw you a million if I win, and no one ever has ... I guess we'll see what happens now."

Mary Neubauer, a spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, where Powerball is based, said people from around the world called hoping for a chance to play but were told they had to be in a participating location to buy a ticket.

The previous Powerball top prize of $365 million was won in 2006 by ConAgra slaughterhouse workers in Nebraska. The largest-ever U.S. lottery jackpot, the $656 million Mega Millions drawing, was shared by three winning tickets last March.

How old is a lobster? Check his eyestalk

The age of a lobster, or a crab or shrimp, can be determined by counting growth rings, as is done with trees. But scientists aren't sure yet how old a lobster can live to be.

By Clarke Canfield,?Associated Press / November 30, 2012

Scientists have now figured out that growth rings can be found in the eyestalk - a stalk with an eyeball on the end. Growth rings are also found in gastric mills - the teeth-like structures in their stomachs used to grind up food.

For the first time, scientists have figured out how to determine the age of a lobster ? by counting its rings, like a tree.

Nobody knows how old lobsters can live to be; some people estimate they live to more than 100.

But knowing ? rather than simply guessing ? their age and that of other shellfish could help scientists better understand the population and assist regulators of the lucrative industry, said Raouf Kilada, a research associate at the University of New Brunswick who was the lead author of a scientific paper documenting the process.

Before now, scientists deduced a lobster's age judging by size and other variables. But it's now known that lobsters and other crustaceans, such as crabs and shrimp, grow one ring per year in hidden-away internal spots, Kilada said.

"Having the age information for any commercial species will definitely improve the stock assessment and ensure sustainability," he said after presenting his findings Thursday at a scientific conference in Portland.

Scientists already could tell a fish's age by counting the growth rings found in a bony part of its inner ear, a shark's age from the rings in its vertebrae and a scallop or clam's age from the rings of its shell.

But crustaceans posed a problem because of the apparent absence of any permanent growth structures. It was thought that when lobsters and other crustaceans molt, they shed all calcified body parts that might record annual growth bands.

For their research, Kilada and five other Canadian researchers took a closer look at lobsters, snow crabs, northern shrimp and sculptured shrimp.

They found that growth rings, in fact, could be found in the eyestalk ? a stalk connected to the body with an eyeball on the end ? of lobsters, crabs and shrimp. In lobsters and crabs, the rings were also found in the so-called "gastric mills," parts of the stomach with three teeth-like structures used to grind up food.

To find the growth bands, the scientists dissected the eyestalks and the gastric mills, cut out sections and viewed them under microscopes.

Lobsters don't lose reproductive capabilities or organ functions or exhibit signs of aging as they get older, but nobody knows for sure how old they can live to be.

"We've thought lobsters could live to 100 years old, and this new aging technique will be a way to document that," said Bob Bayer, executive director of the University of Maine's Lobster Institute.

The paper was published in this month's Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, a well-regarded peer-reviewed scientific journal based in Ottawa, Ontario, that has been published since 1901. Kilada's was one of more than 50 scientific presentations at the conference, attended by more than 100 lobster scientists from the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Bayer agreed that this is the first time scientists have a direct method to place an age on crustaceans.

"Right now we're just guessing at their age," he said.

Kilada said he saw lobster specimens that were 16 or 17 years old during his research. He estimates that there are lobsters 60 or 70 years old living in the wild.

Susan Waddy, a lobster researcher with Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said she has kept lobsters in her laboratory that are more than 30 years old. She suspects they live to be 40 or 50.

"We know they don't live forever," she said.

Israel approves new West Bank settlement construction

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel approved the construction of 3,000 homes in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, a government official said Friday, drawing swift criticism from the Palestinians a day after their successful U.N. recognition bid.

The Palestinians strongly condemned the announcement and repeated their refusal to start peace negotiations while building continued. With Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apparently poised for re-election and insisting that any negotiations begin without preconditions, prospects for peace appear to be going into deep freeze.

The unusually large building plan came a day after the United Nations voted overwhelmingly to accept a Palestinian state in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem as a non-member observer state, setting off jubilant celebrations among Palestinians.

Israel fiercely objected to the U.N. upgrade, saying peace could only come from direct negotiations and unilateral moves would harm that prospect. The Palestinians said the U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state in the territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war was an attempt to salvage a possible peace deal and could bolster talks.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has refused to negotiate with Israeli while settlement construction continues in occupied territories, saying Israel's settlement expansion on war-won land was making a partition deal increasingly difficult.

Prior to word of the Israeli decision, Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdeneh insisted that position hadn't changed, saying settlement building "is not just illegal, it's against the resolution."

More than 500,000 Israelis have moved to the West Bank and east Jerusalem since Israel capturing those territories and Gaza in 1967. Israel unilaterally withdrew its soldiers and settlers from Gaza in 2005.

Netanyahu says negotiations must begin without preconditions.

The Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the sensitive issue publicly, said Israel also decided to begin preliminary work in other areas of the West Bank, including the charged E-1 corridor that connects Jerusalem with the settlement bloc of Maaleh Adumim.

Construction there would place a major obstacle for Palestinian statehood by cutting off east Jerusalem from the West Bank and plans there had previously blocked by the Bush administration for that reason.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat condemned the Israeli announcement, saying Israel was "defying the whole international community and insisting on destroying the two-state solution."

He said the Palestinian leadership was studying its options.

Danny Seidemann, a lawyer for Ir Amim, an Israeli group that supports coexistence in Jerusalem, said construction did not appear imminent and there was "quite a lot of drama" in the Israeli announcement.

"There an element of sticking it to the Palestinians," he said, before adding that plans in E-1 were not only a blow to the Palestinians but to the Americans who oppose them too. "E-1 is the judgment day weapons."

Yesh Din, an Israeli rights group, called the Israeli decision "collective punishment" and called on Israel to retract its move.

"Israel should have understood by now that such behavior ... will no longer be tolerated by the international community," said Yesh Din's Executive Director Haim Erlich.

Earlier this month, Israel said it was pushing forward construction of 1,200 new homes in Jewish settlements, in an apparent warning to the Palestinians to rethink their U.N. plan. Israel fears the Palestinians will use their upgraded status to confront Israel in international bodies and extort it to make concessions.

In recent days, though, Israel had appeared to step back from its initial threats of harsh retaliation.

Former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the onetime chief negotiator with the Palestinians, also slammed the decision.

"The decision at the U.N. on a Palestinian state is bad for Israel and so is Netanyahu's response," said Livni, who this week launched a new opposition party. "The decision to build thousands of housing units as punishment to the Palestinians only punishes Israel ... the unnecessary statement only isolates Israel further."

The results of the U.N. vote were a foregone conclusion, given the sympathies of nearly all member states. Only nine states opposed the bid, including Israel and the United States, while 138 supported it. Unlike the more powerful U.N. Security Council, there are no vetoes in the General Assembly, and the resolution to raise the Palestinian status only required a majority vote for approval.

The vote granted Abbas an overwhelming international endorsement for his key position: establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem. Netanyahu opposes a full pullback to the 1967 lines.

The Palestinians turned to the U.N. after two decades of on-again, off-again talks.

Netanyahu dismissed the U.N. vote as meaningless and accused Abbas of delivering a "defamatory and venomous" U.N. speech "full of mendacious propaganda" against Israel.

Bora's Picks (November 30th, 2012)

Quite an embarrassment of riches this week!

Shifting sexes and sequential hermaphrodites: How sex is determined by Kate Shaw:

It is easy to regard sex as clear-cut, black and white. We regularly have to check the ?male? or ?female? box on various forms, we go to separate sporting events to see men and women compete, and we often choose baby clothes based on whether the bundle of joy is a boy or a girl. But in the natural world, sex is a very gray area?it is diverse, intricate, and often incredibly malleable. Our sexual configuration is just one of many in the animal kingdom, each of which has evolved over many generations to solve particular problems or to ensure success in challenging environments. Sex is simply another tool in the evolutionary toolbox. It allows animals with completely different lifestyles and demands to thrive in an amazing array of ways?.

Blind often afflicted with rare sleep disorder by Alyssa Botelho:

When Jerry Berrier dreams, he hears and touches and smells and talks, but he doesn?t see. Blind since birth, he rarely remembers his dreams, however, because his sleep has been so poor. At 15, Berrier had both of his eyes removed and lost the little light perception he had as a child. Ever since, the Everett resident, now 60, has battled a vicious sleep cycle ? a few days of sleep followed by weeks of hardly any. The bouts of sleeplessness come suddenly and subside without warning. When they hit, Berrier can?t sleep more than a couple hours a night, no matter how tired he is?.

Caffeine-diabetes link still unresolved: study by Kathleen Raven:

Results of a large new U.S. study confirm that sugary drinks are linked to a heightened risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, but shed little light on whether caffeine helps or hinders the process. Among more than 100,000 men and women followed for 22 years, those who drank sugar-sweetened drinks were as much as 23 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who didn?t, but the risk was about the same whether the drinks contained caffeine or not. And drinkers of both caffeinated coffee and decaf had slightly lowered diabetes risk?

The promises and pitfalls of carbon capture by Melissae Fellet:

Extreme weather events, like Superstorm Sandy that just drenched the northeastern coast of the United States, often refocus the public?s attention on climate change. With Sandy, there were no straightforward connections, partly because it?s hard to connect climate change to a single weather event. Nevertheless, the storm may leave the US public more willing to tackle some of the challenges of climate change?.

Chimpanzee justice by Roni Jacobson:

By three years old, human children start to display empathy and will intervene in conflicts where they feel someone has been wronged. Chimpanzees, on the other hand, seem to be stuck in the terrible twos ? like children in that notoriously selfish stage, they will only intercede when they have been directly harmed?.

From ?You are What You Eat? to ?You See What You Eat?: Shedding Light on Ecologically Attuned Vision by Anne-Marie Hodge:

If you have ever been temporarily blinded by sunlight after emerging from a building, or have stubbed a toe in the middle of the night, then you realize first-hand that sensitivity to light is a key element of success in one?s environment. Animals vary dramatically in their visual abilities under different light conditions: birds and bees use UV vision to see colors that we cannot even perceive, some cave animals forgo vision completely, and the rest of us fall somewhere in between on the spectrum of color perception and visual acuity?.

Getting the Prosthetic Is Easy, Compared to Getting It To Do What You Want by Rose Eveleth:

A growing number of soldiers are returning from duty with injuries that have stolen away their limbs. Thankfully, prosthetic technology is getting better, and many of these amputees are learning to live with new arms and legs. But while getting the prosthetic might be costly, it?s learning how to use it that?s the real struggle?.

Q&A: The globalization of infectious disease: Science writer David Quammen talks about his new book ?Spillover? by Nick Stockton:

David Quammen has made his career writing about nature. A former Rhodes Scholar and novelist, he spent 15 years writing the ?Natural Acts? column for Outside Magazine, getting an on-the-job education in ecology, biology, and evolution. In 1997, he published his first non-fiction bestseller, ?The Song of the Dodo,? an exploration of geography and evolution. We recently discussed his latest book, ?Spillover?, about diseases that spread from animals to humans. This phenomenon is called zoonosis, and it is increasing as humanity seeps further into undisturbed habitats. ?

This Robot Is a Better Dad Than Your Dad by Rose Eveleth:

Disney has long had a ?dad problem.? Very few of its movies feature strong father figures, and the strong ones are often evil or power hungry. Now, Disney is remedying that by building a robot that can play catch?.

Generalists and specialists can coexist by Kathleen Raven:

The University of Toronto began an interesting journalism school experiment this year: They recruited students already specialized in a field, and then began teaching them a few journalism skills. This and ascendance of New York Times statistician Nate Silver has caused renewed anguish for aspiring reporters who still attend J-school: to specialize or not??

The Question of Code Revisited: I Think I Can, So Can?t I? by Erin Podolak:

?All of the true things I?m about to tell you are shameless lies.? Is it ever acceptable to walk into an interview with a mentality straight out of the Books of Bokonon from Kurt Vonnegut?s Cat?s Cradle? In addition to being what is possibly my favorite literary quote ever, I think the idea of telling true lies really epitomizes an issue that so many science writers trying to break into the business are facing: when asked what our skills are, is what we feel comfortable knowing, all that we really know? ?

Chewing Caterpillars Causing Plant Evolution by Kate Prengaman:

A caterpillar chomping on a leaf. The aphids nibbling on your rosebushes. Wherever there are plants, you?ll find insects trying to eat them. But when you squash a japanese beetle with a satisfying crunch, you might be interfering with plant evolution. ?

ER doctors at UNC Hospitals look for ways to relate, quickly, to patients by Kelly Poe:

Dr. Nikki Waller treats most of her patients in the emergency room with a common treatment: a rub to the shoulder, and often, a smile. ?For emergency department doctors, it?s hard to connect with your patients. By definition you?ve never seen them before; there?s no existing doctor-patient relationship,? she said. ?It?s very important to gain your patient?s trust, and we have to do that very quickly.?

Why PhD Students Should Blog: My talk at UK Science Blog Prize Evening (also, I won) by Suzi Gage:

?.I?m Suzi, and I?m a 3rd year epidemiology PhD student (epidemiology being the study of population health patterns, rather than skin complaints). I?ve been blogging since Summer 2011. So I?m going to spend 5 minutes telling you how blogging has stopped me becoming a social recluse. I started my PhD in 2010, and despite its sexy topic (cannabis and psychosis? Microsoft will ?crush? Google and ?muscle-out? Apple in smartphone, tablet markets

Google?s (GOOG) Android platform clearly dominates the mobile landscape in terms of market share, and though Samsung (005930) continues to close in, Apple (AAPL) leads the pack in profitability by a wide margin. According to one industry watcher, however, they should all be watching out for Microsoft (MSFT).

Sizemore Capital?s?Charles Sizemore writes in a contribution to?NASDAQ that ?Microsoft will ultimately muscle-out Apple as the leader in smartphones and tablets.? He says the war will be long and grueling, but Microsoft will ultimately pull ahead because Apple has no??durable long-term advantages? to keep customers loyal. He also contends that ?Apple?s insistence on controlling every aspect of both its software and hardware puts it at a disadvantage to a more flexible Microsoft.?

Where Android is concerned, Sizemore says he doesn?t take Google seriously as a long-term competitor because the company?s solutions are ?shoddy? attempts at matching superior offerings from Apple and Microsoft. He points to Google Play Music as an example, though the extent of his complaint seems to be that the app can?t cache music on an SD card as opposed to a device?s internal storage without the user ?hacking? his or her phone. The analyst offers no further examples to substantiate his claims.

?You simply don?t have these sorts of problems with Apple or Microsoft,? Sizemore contends. ?Why? Because they are real companies with real business models. With a few exceptions, they actually charge for their products and offer some degree of support.?

He continues, ?Given that Google gives most of its products away for free, you have to question how seriously they take them. And given my experience with Play Music, the answer is ?not very.? ?

The analyst concludes that while he is not forecasting an ?immediate collapse in Google?s share price,? he finds no evidence to show that Google?s advertising model is sustainable and therefore will not invest in Google. Sizemore discloses that his firm?holds a long position in Microsoft.

Egypt crisis raises fears of 'second revolution'

CAIRO (AP) ? Faced with an unprecedented strike by the courts and massive opposition protests, Egypt's Islamist president is not backing down in the showdown over decrees granting him near-absolute powers.

Activists warn that his actions threaten a "second revolution," but Mohammed Morsi faces a different situation than his ousted predecessor, Hosni Mubarak: He was democratically elected and enjoys the support of the nation's most powerful political movement.

Already, Morsi is rushing the work of an Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly at the heart of the power struggle, with a draft of the charter expected as early as Thursday, despite a walkout by liberal and Christian members that has raised questions about the panel's legitimacy.

The next step would be for Morsi to call a nationwide referendum on the document. If adopted, parliamentary elections would be held by the spring.

Wednesday brought a last-minute scramble to seize the momentum over Egypt's political transition. Morsi's camp announced that his Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists will stage a massive rally in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the plaza where more than 200,000 opposition supporters gathered a day earlier.

The Islamists' choice of the square for Saturday's rally raises the possibility of clashes. Several hundred Morsi opponents are camped out there, and another group is fighting the police on a nearby street.

"It is tantamount to a declaration of war," said liberal politician Mustafa al-Naggar, speaking on the private Al-Tahrir TV station.

Morsi remains adamant that his decrees, which place him above oversight of any kind, including by the courts, are in the interest of the nation's transition to democratic rule.

Backing down may not be an option for the 60-year-old U.S.-educated engineer.

Doing so would significantly weaken him and the Brotherhood at a time when their image has been battered by widespread charges that they are too preoccupied with tightening their grip on power to effectively tackle the country's many pressing problems.

Morsi's pride is also a key factor in a country where most people look to their leader as an invincible figure.

He may not be ready to stomach another public humiliation after backing down twice since taking office in June. His attempt to reinstate parliament's Islamist-dominated lower chamber after it was disbanded in July by the Supreme Constitutional Court was overturned by that same court. Last month, Morsi was forced to reinstate the country's top prosecutor just days after firing him when the judiciary ruled it was not within his powers to do so.

Among Morsi's first acts after seizing near-absolute powers last week was to fire the prosecutor again.

Unlike last year's anti-Mubarak uprising, calls for Morsi's ouster have so far been restricted to zealous chants by protesters, with the opposition focusing its campaign on demands that he rescind his decrees, disband the constitutional panel and replace it with a more inclusive one, and fire the Cabinet of Prime Minister Hesham Kandil.

"There is no practical means for Morsi's ouster short of a coup, which is very, very unlikely," said Augustus Richard Norton, a Middle East expert from Boston University.

Still, the opposition, whose main figures played a key role in the anti-Mubarak uprising, may be tempted to try to force Morsi from office if they continue to draw massive crowds like Tuesday's rally, which rivaled some of the biggest anti-Mubarak demonstrations. They will also likely take advantage of the growing popular discontent with Morsi's government and the fragility of his mandate ? he won just 51 percent of the vote in a presidential election fought against Mubarak's last prime minister.

With the country still reeling from the aftershocks of the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak's 29-year regime, activists and analysts warn that any escalation carries the risk of a second, and possibly bloody, revolution ? pitting Islamists against non-Islamists, including liberals, women and minority Christians.

Ominous signs abound. Anti-Morsi crowds have attacked at least a dozen offices belonging to the Brotherhood across the nation since last week. Clashes between the two sides have left at least two dead and hundreds wounded.

The violence and polarization has led to warnings from some newspaper columnists and the public at large of the potential for "civil war."

"As opposed to seeking face-saving compromises, (escalation by Morsi) would indicate starkly that Egypt's leaders have increasingly come to understand the current moment in zero-sum terms," said Michael W. Hanna, an Egypt expert from the New York-based Century Foundation.

"Beyond the political dangers it poses, the move will increase the risks that the contests for power will spill over into the streets, with civil strife a real possibility."

While potentially destabilizing, Morsi's tug-of-war with the liberal opposition pales in comparison to his battle with the powerful judiciary, which considers the president's decrees an unprecedented assault on its authority.

On Wednesday, judges of the nation's highest appeals court and its lower sister court went on strike to protest the decrees, joining hundreds of other judges who have not worked since Sunday.

The Supreme Constitutional Court, which is to rule Sunday on the legality of the constitutional panel and parliament's upper chamber ? both dominated by Morsi's Brotherhood and other Islamists ? admonished the president for accusing it of trying to bring down his government.

The loss of the judiciary's goodwill could prove costly for Morsi.

Already, the judges are warning that, unless their demands are met, they will not assume their traditional role of supervising a referendum on a new constitution or the parliamentary elections that would follow. Without them, the legitimacy of any vote would be in question.

"This is the highest form of protest," said Nasser Amin, head of the Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession. "The judges felt that the constitutional declaration has taken away from them the dearest and most important mandates" ? oversight of government decisions.

DIY Wi-Fi Antenna Cheaply Extends Your Wireless Network

DIY Wi-Fi Antenna Cheaply Extends Your Wireless NetworkWe've shared tons of ways to boost your home Wi-Fi, but if you need something a bit more powerful, this DIY antenna can stretch your wireless network much further.

DIYer Danilo wanted to share his internet access across multiple apartments, and traditional methods just weren't doing the trick. He wanted to try out a bigger antenna, but before buying one, cooked up a DIY option himself to see how well it worked. All i took was a bit of copper wiring, some aluminum foil, and some tupperware (to keep it protected from the elements, since it sat outside). The result was so good that he didn't even need to buy an antenna. You'll need to be able to solder, but if that's already a skill you have under your belt, this'll probably be a quick and easy project. Hit the link to see more.

2013 Honda Civic

In case you've forgotten, the 2012 Honda Civic landed with a big thud. And rightfully so. The car was a cheap version of its former self and lacked the personality and quality to compete within its segment.

Fortunately for Honda, the brand has some cache. As Honda executives emphatically reminded the audience at Honda's press conference during the L.A. Auto Show, despite the poor reviews, the Civic remains the top-selling car in its category. Even so, Honda acted fast to rectify Civic Gate 2012. For 2013 the carmaker rolled out a heavily refreshed Civic to appease the critics.

The new Civic's sheetmetal was almost entirely overhauled with a new grille and mouth, a new sculpted hood, new wheels, a new taillight design, new trunk lid, and new bumper. On the interior, Honda says it updated the Civic's instrument panel, added soft touch materials to the dash and doors, improved functionality on its information screen, enhanced ride quality and cab quietness, and added Bluetooth, Pandora, SMS texting, and a backup camera standard. In terms of safety, the 2013 Civic will have side curtain airbag sensors and available forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Honda did all of this and more while only having to raise the price of the new 2013 Civic by $160 to $18,965.

It's an impressive upgrade that was accomplished in lighting speed for the auto industry, but you have to wonder how those 2012 Civic owners will feel when they see how much Honda was holding back.

eCommerce is booming ? but it is not a free-for-all

E-commerce may be booming around the world, but this does not mean that?any player can enter the market and expect success.

E-commerce may be booming around the world, but this doesn't mean that simply any player can enter the market and expect success (image: file)

This is according to eCommerce experts and South Africa?s only Magento Gold partner, Vaimo.

Vaimo says e-commerce is delivering good profits ? but only for those who do it right. And as the environment matures, shoppers are becoming increasingly demanding, meaning that only the best e-commerce strategies will succeed in the future.

Recent research indicates that the world?s best sites are seeing rapidly-growing revenues as more and more shoppers take their business online.

But this is not a ticket to easy money. In mature markets, shoppers are becoming more discerning, and are more loyal to e-commerce sites that are intuitive and informative, rather than buying simply because the goods are for sale online.

Forrester Research says in the US, companies will make $280 billion from online sales by 2015 ? up from 2011 sales of $176.2 billion.

In the UK, recent research by yStats found that shoppers spent almost ?35 billion on the Internet during the first six months of 2012 alone, with many of them now starting to shop online using their phones. More than half of all smartphone owners have now used their phone to make at least one purchase over the Internet.

Other UK research, by EpiServer and OnePoll, found, however, that customer satisfaction ratings are dropping. In 2011, the top 25 vendors received an average satisfaction rating of 63%. This year, that figure has dropped to 58% even though shoppers are buying more and more online. Most of them (57%) tend to buy only from a few favoured websites.

Vaimo Chief Operating Officer, Brendan Peo, says this illustrates that e-commerce vendors with a solid and carefully-planned strategy will eventually take the lion?s share of the growing e-commerce market.

?Shopping behaviour changes tremendously in a very short time,? Peo notes. ?The landscape evolves so quickly that if you don?t watch it daily, you will fall behind. Now customers want more than just products for sale online. They want product comparisons, reviews, facebook discussions; they want to book online and try it on in-store. The days are over where the retailer and his technology determine how customers touch and interact with the brand and products. Today, it is all about being customer centric. ?It is the customers? iPhones or iPads, and their social networks, that determine who, where and how people interact with a retailers brand and products.?

?There are key factors in keeping shoppers on a site and encouraging them to buy. These include ease of navigation, full integration with back-end systems, personalisation of the shopping experience, cross-selling, an effective multi-channel presence ? including a mobile site, and regular communication with shoppers about new products they may be interested in.?

Peo points out that an e-commerce platform is intended to sell products. This may seem obvious, but too many brands put the emphasis of their site on design ? not selling. ?Don?t fall into the trap of putting the focus too much on attractive design. You need to focus on sales; there needs to be a very careful balance between the design, the brand and converting sales,? Peo says.

Besides the content, attractive layout and high quality images, the site needs to be intuitive and offer added value ? like presenting associated products in a logical way, says Peo. ?It?s about a lot more than offering affordable goods ? you need to give the user what he is expecting to see at the right time, at the right place. Buying online should be a pleasurable experience ? like dealing with an experienced salesperson.?

Peo says growing numbers of bricks and mortar retailers are looking to expand into online sales, but that they need to do so in a carefully considered way.

?Having a multi-channel presence can boost profits and improve the customer experience,? Peo says, ?but to be effective, a multi-channel? strategy should ensure that the online and offline experience is completely in sync, allowing the customer to enjoy the same brand experience at every touch point.?

Peo says having an e-commerce site that does not deliver a good user experience is possibly worse than not having an e-commerce site at all. ?When the consumer is annoyed by the shopping experience, they are driven away,? he says. The experience colours their perception of the entire brand, and not just the e-commerce component of it.

?When retailers under-invest in their e-commerce platforms, strategy and integration into their back end systems, their sites cannot deliver what online shoppers are after ? a frictionless buying experience across all key touch points,? notes Peo.

Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

By Jonathan Dienst, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- All civil litigation between Dominique Strauss-Kahn and the hotel maid who claimed that he sexually assaulted her has been settled in principle but no paperwork has been signed yet, according to a source familiar with the case.

The parties are expected to be in court next week in the Bronx to finalize the settlements.?

The civil case emerged from the hotel-room encounter that spurred now-dismissed criminal charges against Strauss-Kahn, the former International Monetary Fund chief who was a likely contender to be the next president of ?France before the scandal exploded.

The housekeeper, Nafissatou Diallo said Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her when she arrived to clean his Manhattan hotel suite. Strauss-Kahn denied doing anything violent during the encounter.

Lawyers for both sides are not commenting at this time.

See a?timeline of the case here.

Prosecutors dropped related criminal charges in the summer of 2011, saying they had developed doubts about Diallo's trustworthiness because she had lied about her background and her actions right after the alleged attack.?

Ex-boyfriend smashes car windows | THE BLOTTER

By CELESTE GRACEY
Issaquah Reporter Staff Writer
December 19, 2011 ? Updated 12:02 PM?

The following information was compiled from city of Issaquah and Sammamish police reports:

An ex-boyfriend smashed out three windows of his girlfriend?s Chevy Tahoe, after falsely accusing her of seeing someone else.

The girlfriend told police he often says such things and harasses her with texts and calls when he?s drunk. The ex-boyfriend uses the truck to get to work and makes payments on it, but it was purchased in the girlfriend?s name.

He told her he planned to drop off the truck Nov. 26. The next morning she found the car with the broken windows, but no glass underneath the car.

There were loose pieces still in the windows, so the officers thought the man must not have driven far from where the windows were smashed. They found the smashed glass at a nearby park and ride, and were able to match the safety sticker to the car model.

When they called the boyfriend, he told them the windows were smashed outside a club in Seattle, and that he didn?t report it, because he wasn?t supposed to be driving.

Chicken disputes

An employee at a grocery store on Front Street in Issaquah got into an argument with a customer over a piece of allegedly stolen chicken.

The customer, who contacted police, said the conversation got heated when he produced a receipt proving he had paid for the piece of chicken.

He was asked to leave the store. When he walked into the parking lot another employee allegedly called him a ?slave? Nov. 25. The man decided to contact police after that.

?

Drunk drives down?center of 228th

A drunk man argued with a Sammamish officer as to why he was pulled over, saying it was perfectly legal to drive down the middle of two lanes on 228th Avenue Southeast, because no one else was on the road.

It was about 3:30 a.m., Nov. 27. During their conversation, the man was so nervous he started smoking a cigarette to calm his nerves. When the man failed a field sobriety test, the officer arrested him. He pleaded with the officer, saying the officer was about to ruin his life.

The 59-year-old then exhibited a roller coaster of emotions from crying, being pleasantly jovial to argumentative. He told police that he was embarrassed, because he had children that were supposed to look up to him.

While walking out of the Sammamish police station, the man continued to argue with the officer over the reason for the initial stop, saying it was better for the road to drive down the middle.

?

Beavers hit

Two beavers were hit by a car Nov. 23 on West Lake Sammamish Parkway. At least one of the two died at the scene. Animal control was called to collect them.

?

Illegal fireworks

There were multiple reports of illegal fireworks in west Issaquah Nov. 28, one incident including a mailbox being blown up.

At first someone reported hearing gunshots or fireworks on Jasmine Place. Fifteen minutes later and about a mile and a half away, someone called in a report of what sounded like gunshots from Oak Crest Drive, but at the same time someone reported hearing seeing flashes of fireworks from nearby Pine Cone Drive.

Then, about 20 minutes later, someone called in about their mailbox being blown up on Forest Drive.

?

Fence hopping

Police confronted a man who was reportedly hopping fences and wandering through people?s backyards in Issaquah, when they learned he was looking for his lost cat Dec. 4.

They verified his story with a neighbor who also lived on the 200 block of Dorado Drive Northwest.

?

Bad driving record

Police arrested a 19-year-old after driving about 20 mph over the speed limit on the Issaquah-Pine Lake Road Nov. 28.

After running the teen?s ID number, the officer learned he had multiple outstanding traffic tickets, which caused his license to be suspended. The teen knew about the tickets, and thought he had paid the ones that would have caused his license to be suspended.

The teen also didn?t know that he had a DUI pending blood result tests.

Knowing the teen?s reckless behavior, the officer decided to arrest him. The officer then drove the teen home, and advised his parents that he shouldn?t be driving.

?

New job turns into scam

A Sammamish man was scammed out of about $5,000, after taking a secret shopper job he found online Nov. 28.

The scammers sent fake checks to do the secret shopping. The couple thought they had been cashed, and had wired back about $5,000 to various places throughout the world, when they learned that some of the checks were fake.

Investigation with the postal office revealed that all of the checks were fake. The police took 20 pages of emails as evidence. The scammer was linked back to a home address in California.

?

Graffiti in Issaquah

There were four reported incidences of graffiti in Issaquah Nov. 30-Dec. 1, including spray paint at the Food Bank to tagging on the footbridge at 17th Avenue Northwest.

The other incidences were on Rowley properties and tagging on transformers along Lake Drive.

Zebra, mini horse corralled after NYC street jaunt

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City can be like a zoo sometimes, but a zebra running wild through the streets is not something you ordinarily see.

The Staten Island Advance reports (http://bit.ly/Yr7soL) a zebra and a miniature horse were spotted trotting through a shopping center parking lot Wednesday morning in Staten Island.

Metropolitan Drape & Blind owner Zachary Osher saw the runaway equines and shared his video with the newspaper. He says the animals ran down a street and narrowly escaped being hit by a car. He says two men in dark suits ran after them with lassoes.

A police spokesman says the animals were corralled and returned to a petting zoo.

Exercises for a dynamic December | Fitness

December is a crazy time of year in the fitness industry. This is when many people who have worked hard at their fitness and weight-loss goals all year resign themselves to sparse workouts, overindulgence at parties and general back-sliding in their fight for fitness.

I???m hoping to reduce this trend and help you make your December just as healthy as every other month by sharing a number of dynamic exercises over the coming weeks. I hope you can include these dynamic training principles into your fitness plan.

Remember that variety is one thing that our bodies respond well to when it comes to training stimulus. If we get in too much of a routine, our fitness results gradually diminish and will eventually plateau. This is always a great time to shake it up a bit, and these dynamic training techniques are the answer.

Dynamic exercises utilize multiple body segments and muscle groups in an active manner that provides a number of different challenges, such as strength and balance, or flexibility and core strength, etc.

Often there can also be a cardiovascular component as well, resulting in an elevated heart rate and breathing frequency.

All of these benefits should add up to enhanced fitness, improved general health, elevated metabolism and increased fat loss. Although the dynamic overload aspect of these exercises is important, optimal body position, core stability and movement quality must prevail.

If you???ve had any serious spinal or joint conditions, or recent surgeries, it is important to get clearance from the experts in advance. As always, consult your doctor before beginning or modifying your training plan, and be sure to perform a progressive warm-up before exercising.

Dynamic warm-up: Leg swings

I really like exercises that require the body to adapt and perform on a variety of levels at the same time.

Dynamic leg swings are just such an exercise, requiring balance, co-ordination, flexibility and core stabilization all at the same time, while elevating the heart rate and lubricating the joints.

Start by standing tall on both feet, and begin to swing your right leg like a pendulum, from front to back while balancing on your left foot. Keep your core engaged to maintain a neutral spine as you increase the power and velocity of the leg swing (imagine kicking a soccer ball over and over).

Begin to swing your arms opposite your legs, and focus on the core connection between your upper and lower extremities.

As you increase the force and range of motion of the arm and leg movements, you can begin to rise up onto your left forefoot as your right leg swings in front, dropping onto your heel as the leg swings back.

Always maintain neutral spinal and pelvic alignment. Perform two to three sets of 25 swings on each leg, striving for balanced power and stability on each side of the body.

Dynamic conditioning: Twisting jump lunges

As a more advanced dynamic exercise, twisting jump lunges with a medicine ball incorporate many of the body???s muscles and require core stability, balance and overall athleticism. Start by holding a four- to six- pound medicine ball in both hands, directly in front of your body. Step forward with your right leg into a lunge position, keeping equal weight on both feet, with 90-degree angles at both knees and strong gluteal engagement. Turn from the rib cage, rotating your arms and the medicine ball over your front leg. Pause in this position, being sure to engage your core and stabilize your spine.

In a single, integrated, explosive movement, switch legs as you swing the medicine ball across to the left side, pausing in a balanced and aligned position. Repeat for a total of 20 repetitions, and perform two to three sets.

Dynamic core and flexibility: Pike inchworm

I like quadruped and sprawl position activities due to the core stability requirements to create the sling support against gravity.

Start in a full pushup position, with your arms fully extended supporting your upper body weight.

Maintaining core stability and good spinal alignment, slowly inch your feet forward toward your hands as you keep your legs long. The closer your feet get, and the higher your hips rise, the more you should feel your hamstrings and calves stretch.

When you???ve gone as far as possible, begin to slowly walk your hands forward until you reach the starting position. Repeat this sequence multiple times, using core control to keep your pelvis square and level throughout the movement.

Each time you reach the final pike position, try to push a bit higher with the hips to improve your range of motion. Perform a total of 10 to 15 repetitions through this sequence.
