Loy Machedo's Public Speaking Tip Number 2 | Loy Machedo

Loy Machedo?s Public Speaking Tip Number 2

Today?s Tip is going to have more questions & criticism directed at me more than any other tip.

Dress Sense.

At my Seminars, Training Programs as well as Public Speaking Engagements, I am known to wear informal clothing. It can be as simple as jeans, t-shirt and sports shoes to polo neck, Knee-high khakis & Beach Wear Slippers.

But now the Formal world screams ? Isn?t a Professional Speaker supposed to wear A Black Suit, Gleaming Polished Shoes & a Strong Colored Power Neck Tie?

Consider these four examples.

Tony Robbins (www.tonyrobbins.com)
I am sure you know who he is. In case you do not ? well here is a few one liners about him.

Larry?s Dress Sense?
He wears Cowboy boots, Wears Gold Ring on each of his fingers, has ear-rings, a few Tattoos, Wear Custom Designed Shirts with lots of colors on them and yes, Jeans Trousers.
(If you feel this does not work in the corporate world, he is the brand for Hyundai ?Dollars and Sense? commercials.)

Frank Kern?s Dress Sense?
Even though he has been invited to some of the top events in the world ? He wears the most ordinary T-Shirt you can find, either shorts or an ordinary jeans trouser and yes, his trade mark ? most of the time he comes walking bare foot.

I am sure you will now say this.

In a world filled with 8 Billion people, just because 4 people broke the rule, does it support the argument not wearing formals?

The answer is simply this ? What is your branding strategy?

If your branding strategy is to target the Corporate World, Rub Shoulders with the Legends of the Formal Power Dressed Executives and be invited to Rolls Royce Phantom Driven Events ? well may be you should wear a Formal Outfit. And not just a normal one rather an outstanding out.

However, if your knowledge base is anything but average, your expertise is anything but normal and your intellect is anything but boring, then wearing an expensive suit, is more like having a Red Sleek Ferrari Bod on a 1986 Toyota Corolla Engine.

Haven?t you met idiots who bore you to death, whose speaking skills are worse than hearing a screeching car, and whose character is more rotten than your 12-day old fungus filled garbage? Do you actually believe, that if they wore a suit, it would make any difference?

So, this is my take.

Loy Machedo

Find out what is your branding strategy.
Who are you?
What do you know?
Who is your target audience?
How much do you know?
How much are people willing to pay for it?
What is your branding strategy?
What is your brand?
How important is what you wear in line with your brand.
How can you stand out or stay memorable in line with your brand principles?

If you know the answers to these questions, it is most probable, you will know what to wear.

Irrespective what Tony, Frank, The Scary Guy or Larry Winget wears, I believe people pay me for my expertise, my knowledge and what I bring to the table. That is why I wear what I wear ? My brand being Creative, Controversial, Charismatic, yet Communicative. My wardrobe being the same.

So what should you wear today?
You decide.

PS ? And just to let you know, I have been writing this article wearing only my bathroom towel after my 6am, 60 minutes jogging session. So did it really matter what I wore when I wrote this article?
