TOKYO (AP) ? Computer chipmaker Elpida Memory Inc. filed for Japan's largest manufacturing bankruptcy Monday after amassing debts from nose-diving prices, competition from Samsung and flooding in Thailand last year that stifled demand.

Elpida, the only manufacturer in Japan to specialize in DRAM chips used in mobile phones and computers, reported debt of 448 billion yen ($5.5 billion) in filing for bankruptcy at Tokyo District Court on Monday.

That was the largest ever for a bankruptcy in Japan in the manufacturing field, according to Teikoku Databank, which compiles such information.

Elpida, set up in 1999 as a joint venture between Japanese electronics companies NEC Corp. and Hitachi Ltd., has been struggling for years to close the gap with rival Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea.

The Tokyo-based company, which employs more than 3,000 people, said its business was hit when DRAM prices declined from about 2007, and got worse with the global downturn.

The surging yen also came as a blow as well as intense competition, it said.

Elpida said the flooding in Thailand last year battered DRAM demand, furthering hurting its operations. Global hard-drive production was disrupted by the floods as Thailand is a major production base for hard-drive makers.

"We have concluded that, if we continue the business by ourselves, we will face cash shortage soon," the company said.

In 2009, Elpida got government emergency aid totaling 30 billion yen ($375 million) in investments through the government-owned Development Bank of Japan. Other Japanese electronics makers have pulled out of the DRAM business.

Am I at a good weight and what is a Detox Diet? | Health and Fitness ...

Question by allison: Am I at a good weight and what is a Detox Diet?
This is pretty hypocritical since I always tell people that it doesn?t matter about the way they look. But whatever.
I?m a 15 year old girl and I?m 5?6. I weigh about 117 pounds and I?d like to lose a few more. I?ve battled with anorexia for a a few years now and I?m trying to change. All I ate today was oatmeal. What?s a detox diet and is it safe?

Best answer:

Answer by Sugar Magnolia
You are already at a healthy weight, maybe even underweight when you take your height into account. You are 15 years old, you?re still growing, teenagers need more calories than adults. You have to start eating healthy! It seems you have some major body issues and you really need to get help with that. Screw the detox diet?.just eat healthy foods during the day and make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. You are too young to be starving yourself, you?re still growing!!

Video: Warm weather saved money

>>> despite a few cold snaps here and there, this winter is going down as the fourth warmest in 117 years. 80% of the country has had an above normal season. you can thank the jet stream that has been stuck in place, keeping cold air far to the north. that's been good news for city budgets, jobs and businesses big and small. we get the story tonight from nbc's tom costello.

>> reporter: from 60 and 70 degree days along the east coast to the crowded links in the midwest, for much of the country it has been a snowless winter. for proof look no further than the piles of unused salt and idle plows in boston . by this time last year, boston had already dug out of 73 inches of snow. so far this year, just 7 inches. of the $17 million it budgeted for snow removal , it used only $2 million. so rather than battle snow and ice, they declared war on another boston nemesis, potholes.

>> so far this winter we filled about 2500 potholes. we have used about 200 tons of asphalt.

>> reporter: lots of cities have been saving money on plows and salt. by this time in february, new york has usually cleared 19 inches of snow. this season, it only had 7 inches. buffalo normally has 76 inches by now, this year, just 33 inches. chicago, normally 28 by now. this year, 19. minneapolis, 39 is normal. 18 inches this year. and fargo usually has had 36 inches. this year, just 16. fewer snow days mean more days on the job. construction crews at the new boston tea party ships and museum project are running ahead of schedule.

>> last year we lost over 25 working days. this year we lost three. with that translates into is real savings for owners on projects.

>> reporter: it is happening across the country, 21,000 construction jobs added in january, 31,000 in december. and all those jobs helped bring the unemployment rate down. true, the season hasn't been kind to ski resorts , tow truck operators or folks who like to ice fish . but the weather channel 's jim c cantore says the warmup may be easier.

>> we may not see the flooding we had last year on all three of the major rivers in this country.

>> reporter: expect more bugs this spring, pollen too. but at jp licks ice cream , they're not complaining.

>> we're busier, 20% up over last year.

>> reporter: licking their way to a warm, profitable winter. tom costello, nbc news, boston .

Keep Your Weight Loss From Hitting a Plateau by Fooling Your ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

If you?re like the majority of people out there, no doubt you?ve tried a number of diets to different degrees of success. You may have lost some weight but you typically get to a certain point and then nothing you do can help you shed more. This plateau that the majority of people hit, is common with just about all diet plans. It?s not possible to avoid the plateau problem if you don?t learn to fool your metabolism.

You most likely have already dealt with this plateau, which will normally end the diet plan with lots of disappointment. This is a strange thing that happens to even the most successful dieters sometime around the third or fourth week of the diet they have picked. Right until that point the weight seems to come off with no difficulties and then it just stops and nothing really works to help the body lose more fat. It?s your body responding to the things you?re putting it through. Your body goes into a protection mode to keep you from starving and it will decelerate your rate of metabolism. What this winds up doing is stopping your body from losing any more weight.

This is what causes people to think they?re not capable of losing the weight they want, and they give up trying. This is where many people return to eating and start getting back their weight usually more than they lost initially. The way to prevent this is by using a diet where you move calories. It means that you eat a different number of calories every day which can help fool your metabolism. If this strategy works on your body, then it doesn?t get into the position where it is attempting to protect itself. This can keep your metabolism steady instead of slowing down and you will shed even more weight. When you get to this point, you have passed your plateau and your diet will continue working the way it was created to work.

It?s simple to use this kind of plan for your every day routine. Perhaps the most popular method of caloric shifting is the 14 day method. In this program, you stick to your diet for eleven days and then on the 12, 13 and 14th days you eat the things you truly want to eat. You move your foods during the day, tricking your metabolism, and for three day eat what you want, stopping the plateau. This also keeps you from becoming frustrated at a rigid regimen with your eating. Simply keep repeating the fourteen days until you?ve reached your weight loss goals.

The 2 day plan is one other excellent plan in which you eat normally for one day and then cut your calories by 20% all the way up to 35%. You could keep on doing this every 2 days for as long as necessary to get your weight off. This is a program that deserves your attention since it could be just what you need to pass your plateau and drop all of the weight you want to lose.

Metaphorical search engine finds creative new meanings

YossarianLives, named after the anti-hero of Catch-22, doesn't tell you what everyone else knows ? it seeks to creatively generate new knowledge

TYPING "love" into Google, I find the Wikipedia entry, a "relationship calculator" and Lovefilm, a DVD rental service. Doing the same in YossarianLives, a new search engine due to launch this year, I might receive quite different results: "river", "sleep" and "prison". Its creators claim YossarianLives is a metaphorical search engine, designed to spark creativity by returning disparate but conceptually related terms. So the results perhaps make sense if you accept that love can ebb and flow, provide rejuvenating comfort or just make you feel trapped.

"Today's internet search tells us what the world already knows," explains the CEO of YossarianLives, J. Paul Neeley. "We don't want you to know what everyone else knows, we want you to generate new knowledge." He says that metaphors help us see existing concepts in a new way and create innovative ideas. For example, using a Formula 1 pit crew as a metaphor for doctors in an emergency room has helped improve medical procedures. YossarianLives aims to create new metaphors for designers, artists, writers or even scientists.

The name is derived from the anti-hero of the novel Catch-22, as the company wants to solve the catch-22 of existing search engines, which they say help us to access current knowledge but also harm us by reinforcing that knowledge above all else.

Neeley won't reveal exactly how the engine works, but says they aren't directly teaching the system any metaphors. Instead, they are using statistical natural-language processing techniques similar to those employed by Google and other search engines. These methods map out the relationship between words, putting closely related concepts such as "dog" and "bone" near to each other while placing unrelated terms such as "dog" and "ironing board" further apart. While a regular search engine typically returns the nearest terms, Neeley says YossarianLives looks for words that are further away but still share a linking conceptual structure.

The search engine's success depends on divining such connections. Phil Blunsom, a researcher in computational linguistics at the University of Oxford, is sceptical. "Detecting metaphors is pretty difficult in itself, mapping between them is very difficult, and to do this with enough accuracy to be usable seems a bit hopeful," he says.

One version of the search engine creates a list of words based on an internet search, but only returns a single image representing one of those words, after searching for appropriately tagged photos on Flickr.

The results can be ambiguous. When New Scientist tested the system and searched for "science" the image of a happy couple was returned, which Neeley says could indicate "chemistry". As such, the user seems to be the one creating the metaphorical connection rather than the software - suggesting that perhaps random results might be just as good for sparking creativity, though Neeley insists that isn't the case.

The company is now testing its algorithms to determine the best balance point between the literal results of the type returned by Google and random results. "There's this really nice sweet spot where results are disparate but close enough that people can make that leap," says Neeley.

What Does Risk Cost Your Business? - Commercial ? Residential ...

By Drew Levine @ Security Magazine.

One of the most crucial issues for businesses right now is managing risk. After all, risk, if left unchecked, can be a serious drain on budgets and assets. While risk comes in all shapes and sizes, identifying which incidents cause the biggest danger to your company is critical to protecting your business. Let?s consider the possible economic ramifications of risk on business operation:

Safety issues. Carefully monitoring spills, for example, can avoid the huge costs that could be associated with a single slip-and-fall liability claim.

Equipment failures and fire hazards. Overseeing equipment operation and being attentive to possible fire hazards are common-sense ways to avoid disaster.

Workplace violence. Effective security measures and visitor management, along with well-understood emergency response protocols, can prevent such random events ? and/or minimize their impact.

Human resources issues. A combination of employee education along with specific procedures and systematic response protocols will help manage costs.

Compliance violations. Enforcing compliance, company policies and industry standards should be accompanied by thorough follow up and corrective action.

Accidents and injuries. Rapid reporting to a pre-selected company incident management team and a well-planned response are always important.

Property theft. Employee theft can be very costly to any business, so prevention and the implementation of effective counter measures to prevent future trouble are critical components to risk management strategies.

As you can see from the short list above, risk can impact every department within a company. All functional areas within an organization from security, facilities, HR, legal, safety, and compliance ? at some point, are impacted by risk and its cost.

So, it?s important that the security industry evolves to help customers find solutions to risk management and at the same time be highly resilient when a disaster or emergency does happen. Programs andsystems should be in place to ensure a timely response to any event with a combination of manpower and technology. Supplementing security officers ? and enabling them to act in real-time using hand-held communication devices creates a good start to a comprehensive risk mitigation plan. But pressures in today?s business environment may require additional technology, such as risk management software, to provide a full and comprehensive view of incidents and their true costs.

Some risk management software solutions can be expensive, difficult to use and may not meet the needs of everyone within a company or the unique business environment. So, it?s very important to find incident management software that?s easy-to-use and cost effective to help with the full life cycle of risk management starting from: capturing complete information at the time of the initial event, tracking incidents to their closures, providing secure digital data storage and analyzing if and when counter measures are working. Risk management software can also help document and record all important compliance initiatives.

Before making a decision on purchasing new incident management software or replacing an outdated system, companies may want to ask three simple questions to help clarify your company?s unique business needs and ultimately help find the best solution.

How does your company currently capture incident data and are managers notified in real-time?

How does your company gather incident data for reports? And then how is that data stored and is it secure?

How does your company currently analyze corrective measures to truly know if your efforts are helping to mitigating risk, lower costs or maintain compliance?

Businesses face a constant balancing act between risk expense and risk mitigation measures. However, managing risk effectively doesn?t always have to be expensive. Sometimes implementing a comprehensive security solution using a combination of manpower and technology can minimize risk without costing a lot. Companies who aren?t looking at risk mitigation techniques may find some of the least costly incidents, when left unchecked actually lead to expensive consequences.

As companies build a database of incidents, managers can begin to see trends and identify areas to optimize. So, it?s essential in today?s complex business environment for companies, both large and small, to have a comprehensive risk management process that combines the best security officers with case management technology to support a continuous process of improvement and analysis to reveal potential risks, help reduce costs and mitigate compliance exposures.

New research from ICM lifts the lid on online gaming and women ...

Bookmark and Share

New research from ICM Research into the profile of online gamers in the UK has revealed, somewhat surprisingly, that women are just as keen as men on gaming (65 per cent women to 66 per cent men).

Here are some of the findings.

Two in three Facebook gamers are women, with 50 per cent of them between 25 and 45.

15 per cent of people in the UK regularly play Facebook games like Cityville & Words with Friends ? and 45 per cent of those play every day, often for up to three hours at a time.

Under 45s of both genders tend to play games to pass the time.

Over 45s, particularly women, are more likely to play games to keep mentally fit.

Contrary to popular general perception, online gambling is least popular among older women.

For older women, the social element of online gaming is really important ? they go online to interact with current friends and to make new ones. While the games draw them in, they tend to make repeat visits to chat, socialize or interact with younger family members.

They are open to brand tie-ins and sponsored free games as long as commercial information is integral to the game and doesn?t interrupt them.

They worry about damaging their computers and prefer games they don?t have to download.

Older women are gaming as an alternative to standard entertainment such as TV and puzzle books.
ICM research director Emily Hunt (pictured) says: ?Our original focus was on female gamers but the data revealed some interesting new insights into the gaming community as a whole. Qualitatively we learned that there is a general desire to keep active through gaming with most people tending to prefer quick and easy games as opposed to longer, more mission-based games.

?With the growing emphasis on social and digital media, this research has several implications for the marketing and media industries. Overall, it is clear that gaming is equally popular with both genders ? so marketers need to take that into account when launching products and planning campaigns, while remaining conscious of the discrete motivations and preferences of different user groups.?

Oral Hygiene Isn't Just About White Teeth | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

The majority of people realise that brushing your teeth is a very important thing to do. A twice daily brushing routine is vital for keeping tooth decay at bay and making sure your teeth are nice and healthy, as well as making sure they are lovely and white. What most people don?t know, however, is that by giving their teeth a good clean twice a day, they are also safeguarding against more dangerous conditions, that at first glance don?t appear to be related to the teeth at all. Shocking evidence has recently shown that people with poor oral health are much more likely to experience health complications such as osteoporosis, heart disease, alzheimer?s and diabetes. Poor oral health has also been shown to be a potential cause of pneumonia.

As a lot of people are aware, the chief purpose of brushing isn?t whitening the teeth, it?s removing bacteria from the mouth. Our mouths and teeth are absolutely crawling with bacteria, but usually it isn?t going to present a problem; a healthy brushing regime will almost always keep this bacteria from becoming a problem. Arming yourself with an efficient electric toothbrush such as the best electric toothbrush can help a lot.

In some certain circumstances, however, the natural balance of bacteria can be disrupted in the mouth, and this can mean that harmful bacteria finds it?s way into the bloodstream. This situation commonly occurs when certain medicines are being taken.

I?m sure that these facts have got your attention now, and you?re wondering what you can do! After all, if you can improve your dental health it seems that you?re going to be able to improve your overall general health also.

Firstly, you need to have a professional cleaning regularly, at least on a yearly basis. It?s staggering to find out that the findings of a recent study, that were presented at the American Heart Assosication meeting for November 2011, concluded that patients who had at least two professional cleanings over a two year period were 24% less likely to have a heart attack! Not only that, but they were at 13% lower risk of a stroke. This, when compared to patients who didn?t bother to attend a dentist surgery for a cleaning.

If you?d like some more tips about how to improve your dental health, you should take a look at our blog. We take an in-depth look at the latest electric toothbrush models, and you?ll also find a lot more articles of how to keep your teeth clean, and white. Return of Diving Horse called off in Atlantic City, N.J. | NOLA.com

The Diving Horse has finally been put out to pasture for good. The owner of the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, N.J., says he's dropping a plan to bring back the legendary attraction, which featured a horse and a rider plunging into a 12-foot-deep water tank from a platform 40 feet in the air, after animal-welfare activists lodged fierce criticism. The act ran on the pier from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Anthony Catanoso, whose family owns the historic pier, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he's no longer interested in reviving something that helped make the pier world famous in the last century.

"We just felt that since Atlantic City is moving forward, we should move forward with it," he said. "We should create new memories for visitors instead of recreating old ones."

Catanoso revived the act once before, in 1993, but shut it down after two months following similar protests from animal-welfare activists.

He had envisioned the Diving Horse as the centerpiece of a refurbished Steel Pier, part of an overall makeover of the gambling resort being planned by local and state officials. He downplayed the significance of public opposition in the latest decision to pull the plug on the Diving Horse but acknowledged that the protests did take their toll.

"That negativity -- we didn't want that to interfere with the positive things we're trying to do," he said.

Roseann Trezza, executive director of the Associated Humane Societies in New Jersey, said she was delighted with the change in plans.

"You have people trying to make a buck off the backs of animals, and it's really cruel exploitation," she said. "Everybody worked together against that, and I am so happy to see that happen."

Catanoso proposed reviving the act earlier this month when a massive redevelopment plan for Atlantic City's Boardwalk, casino district and shopping areas was unveiled. But within days, animal-welfare activists were voicing opposition.

The Humane Society of the United States said its members "emphatically oppose equine diving acts."

"This is a merciful end to a colossally stupid idea," society president Wayne Pacelle said. "We are pleased so many citizens spoke up and urged that this spectacle never get off the ground. Horse diving has the potential to frighten and injure and kill horses, and it rightly belongs in Atlantic City's history books."

A petition against the act on the website change.org garnered 10,000 signatures in one day.

Catanoso said he extensively researched the act, including speaking with past performers. In a press release announcing his intention to bring back the act earlier this month, he determined that no horse was ever harmed.

"Through this research, we determined there was no animal cruelty or abuse that occurred in the past," he wrote. "The new act will be humane, provide the horses first class care, operate under modern safety standards to protect both the riders and the horses and will not subject the horses to cruelty. We understand and share the community's concern regarding the inhumane treatment of animals. For the past 20 years, we have been dedicated to providing wholesome family entertainment in Atlantic City. We are committed to that goal and would never feature any act that would mistreat an animal."

Protesters had been trying to organize a demonstration at the next meeting of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority to protest the inclusion of the Diving Horse in a redevelopment plan for Atlantic City, the nation's second-biggest gambling market after Las Vegas.

Although the Diving Horse was the most attention-getting aspect, the Steel Pier is undergoing a $100 million renovation that will take 3 1/2 years and will make it a year-round attraction. Some work is already under way. This summer, there will be six new rides, several new games, beer gardens, new food and beverage kiosks and a resurfacing of the pier floor.

Wayne Parry of The Associated Press wrote this report.

Space pioneer John Glenn honored 50 years after historic flight

Hundreds of NASA workers jammed a space center auditorium to mark the 50th anniversary of John Glenn's historic flight, to see and hear the first American to circle the Earth.

John Glenn?fever gripped Cape Canaveral on Friday, just as it did half a century ago when America was on the verge of launching its first man into?orbit.

Hundreds of NASA workers jammed a space center auditorium, three days before the 50th anniversary of Glenn's historic flight, to see and hear the first American to circle the Earth. Then journalists got a crack at Glenn, ever patient at describing his momentous flight aboard Friendship 7 and the decades?since.

The 90-year-old Glenn was joined at both events by?Scott Carpenter, 86, the only other survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, as the weekend of anniversary festivities?began.

Milestones in U.S. manned spaceflight

Glenn said he recollects the flight so often it seems like it took place just a couple weeks ago. He and Carpenter visited their old launch pad, Complex 14; it was from the blockhouse there that Carpenter called out "Godspeed John Glenn" before the rocket?ignited.

The national attention then was "almost unbelievable," Glenn said, adding that he and his colleagues learned to live with the acclaim "or tried to?anyway."

The early 1960s were a magical time in Cape Canaveral and adjoining Cocoa Beach, Carpenter said. "Everyone was behind us. The whole nation was behind what we were doing," he?said.

Glenn's Friendship 7 capsule circled Earth three times on Feb. 20, 1962. Carpenter followed aboard Aurora 7 on May 24,?1962.

They were the third and fourth Americans to rocket into space.?Alan Shepard?and?Gus Grissom?flew short suborbital missions in 1961, the same year the Soviet Union launched two cosmonauts into orbit on separate?shots.

The Cold War was raging, and America was desperate to even the score. Glenn could have died trying if the heat shield on his capsule was loose as flight controllers feared. But the protective shield was tight, and Glenn splashed down?safely.

Glenn, a US senator for Ohio for 24 years, returned to orbit aboard shuttle Discovery in 1998, becoming the world's oldest spaceman at age 77 and cementing his super-galactic?status.

"Flying in space at age 77, you've given me hope. I've got a few good years left, and I'm ready,"?Kennedy Space Center?director?Robert Cabana, a former shuttle commander, told Glenn.

Another retired shuttle commander, NASA Administrator?Charles Bolden?Jr., shared how the Mercury astronauts "really lit up the world for me in terms of probability or possibility of things that we could?do."

Glenn recalled how the Mercury astronauts traveled during their training to Cape Canaveral to watch a missile blast off. It was a night launch, and the rocket blew apart over their?heads.

What will you miss about 'Downton Abbey'?

Nick Briggs / ITV for MASTERPIECE

The second season of "Downton Abbey" comes to a close Sunday, Feb. 19.

By Ree Hines

The end is nigh ? well, the end of the second season of "Downton Abbey" is nigh, and for many of us, that means Sunday nights won't be quite the same until it returns.

As we say so long to Lord Grantham's family and those who serve them, we also say goodbye to our weekly dose of elegance, disapproving looks (and the dowager countess who dishes them out), class struggles and of course, (often doomed) romance.

Who or what will you miss most after Sunday night's finale? The upstairs scandals? The downstairs drama? Maybe it's the quotes. After all, we may never have known that "really smart people sleep in separate rooms" if Mary hadn't told us.

So take our poll below and let us know what will keep you pining for another trip to the Abbey until season three rolls around. And be sure to share your thoughts about the series on our Facebook page.

What will you miss most about "Downton Abbey"?

Supermassive black holes are cannibals, new research suggests

Astronomers have found black holes and supermassive black holes. But the discovery of a mid-size black hole could support the idea that supermassive black holes grow by eating others.

In a galaxy 290 million light-years away, a cosmic fugitive has emerged from hiding, bearing clues about how galaxies and the supermassive black holes at their centers evolve.

The fugitive:?the never-seen-before intermediate-sized black hole.

For three years, an international team of astronomers has had the elusive black hole under surveillance. The researchers now say they've found the strongest candidate yet for the mid-sized black hole, which may have been at the core of a dwarf galaxy that collided with a larger galaxy less than 200 million years ago.

If the analysis holds up, it would strengthen the notion that the black holes at the center of galaxies grow through collisions and mergers involving their host galaxies, just as the galaxies themselves are thought to grow. In the case of the fugitive, dubbed ESO 243-49 HLX-1, it's expected to eventually merge with the supermassive black hole at the center of its host galaxy.

A black hole is an object with gravity so strong that nothing can escape its grip, even when traveling at the speed of light. Astronomers have found convincing evidence that black holes, which form from the collapse of individual stars, exist. They've also found convincing evidence that supermassive black holes exist in the hearts of galaxies.

But questions remain about whether?intermediate-mass black holes exist, let alone about how they formed, notes Mathieu Servillat, an astrophysicist and member of the team reporting the results in the journal Astrophysical Review Letters.

Although the team has been studying HLX-1 as if it were an intermediate-mass black hole, astronomers have yet to agree on any candidate as the real deal. In the past eight years, two other groups have each identified a candidate. But the evidence for each failed to convince other researchers.

?If intermediate black holes exist, they would have an impact at different stages of the evolution of the universe,? says?Dr. Servillat, a researcher at France's National Center for Space Studies. ?At the very beginning, you have to form intermediate-mass black holes. Is this a giant star that is collapsing? Is this a number of stellar-mass black holes accumulating to become an intermediate black hole??

For now, the team's work may shed light on how a midsized black hole contributes to the growth of a supermassive black hole.

HLX-1 was discovered in 2009 by Sean Farrell, a researcher at the University of Sydney in Australia, and leader of the team reporting these latest results. It betrayed its presence through x-ray emissions that were extraordinarily bright. The emissions come from heating of dust and gas as it spirals in toward the black hole's point of no return.

HLX-1 was too bright to be a black hole formed from the collapse of a single star. The best match between what Dr. Farrell observed and theorists' models of black-hole behavior suggested a black hole with about 20,000 times the mass of the sun. Stellar black holes are thought to range from three to 80 solar masses. Supermassive black holes range from 1 million to more than 1 billion solar masses.

In addition, over the three years the team has monitored the object, it has brightened and dimmed roughly once a year. This suggests that a star may be swinging around the black hole in an elliptical orbit, losing matter to the black hole with each closest approach and causing it to flare.

The gentle art to wellness ? men still need to ... - Men Health Wizard

?Wellness was long regarded as a topic for women,? says Lutz Hertel, chairman of Germany?s Wellness Association. ?That?s because of the history of the wellness movement in Germany which in its initial phase was treated like a new type of fitness.?

The ?gentle form of wellness? led to the popularisation of fitness gymnastics and had nothing to do with Arnold Schwarzenegger-style weight-lifting. Thus women had a greater affinity with wellness. ?But in the last 10 years men have been attracted to wellness and are quite happy to try out a sauna, visit a gym studio or a spa hotel.?

A survey conducted in Germany in 2008 showed that men spent 17 minutes a day on average grooming themselves and an extra 13 minutes on caring for their faces. That time did not include taking a shower, having a bath or shaving. ?Those figures show that men have overtaken women who spend on average 26 minutes a day on body and face care,? Martin Ruppmann, general manager of Germany?s VKE cosmetic association, said at the time.

But when it comes to relaxation men have a different goal than women, according to Hertel. ?They want to remain energetic and young, to be fit, to look fresh and exude a manly strength.? For men it?s not the path that?s the goal, it?s the goal that?s of most importance. ?That means men often tend to take a much more active and performance-related approach to wellness that is far from gentle.?

The phenomenon can be most clearly observed in saunas. ?Men like visiting the hottest saunas, sitting on the highest bench and staying as long as they can stand the heat.? That not only illustrates that visiting a sauna can be a high performance sport, but that it can also be absurd and even damage your health.

?It would be better if men didn?t continually challenge themselves but had a much more tender approach,? says Hertel. ?Most men need to discover the moment of enjoyment in taking exercise, going to a sauna or getting a massage and not just think about the goal.?

Naturally not all men are like that. Many are quite prepared to leave the hard-man image aside and growing numbers are trying out cosmetic products. Figures produced by Germany?s VKE cosmetic association from 2010 indicate men are turning towards skincare products. ?Sales of men?s cosmetics are continuing to grow by six per cent. From year to year men are developing an affinity for cosmetics and skincare products.?

Gabriele Haeusler from Germany?s Association of Beauticians confirms that trend. ?Men are becoming more vain and want care products,? she says. Men have different priorities compared to women when it comes to which products they choose. ?Men usually don?t want to have several products. Instead, they prefer as few as possible or even just the one product that quickly and efficiently does the job.?

Haeusler advises men older than their mid-30s to start using care products. ?It?s at that age that the skin begins to show the influence of stress and other factors.? The three most important parts of the body to watch out for are the face, the hands and the feet which usually get far less care than they actually need.

?It?s useful to apply a cleansing milk to your face in the evening and which leaves a light layer of oil on the skin. It should also clear your skin of the grime and dirt that collects over the day,? says Haeusler.

It?s important that the cleansing milk does not dry your skin out. After shaving in the morning you should check to see how sensitive your skin is and then use an appropriate face cream. ?In most cases a milky lotion or cream that leaves a trace of oil behind is fine.? If the cream is perfumed make sure it matches your aftershave.

Men have a wide range of hand-care products to choose from. ?There are creams made with sea salt that leave a thin film of oil,? says Haeusler. Wheatgerm or sweet almond oil are also good. ?They help keep your nails and cuticles soft and smooth.? Care for the feet is even easier.

Berlin ? Relaxation, visiting a spa and having a make-over have largely been in the domain of women for a long time. Men are slowly catching up: visiting the sauna, having a massage or even getting a manicure. Nevertheless, the concepts of relaxation and wellness often mean different things to men and women.

?Wellness was long regarded as a topic for women,? says Lutz Hertel, chairman of Germany?s Wellness Association. ?That?s because of the history of the wellness movement in Germany which in its initial phase was treated like a new type of fitness.?
