Rihanna: Brown reunion 'my mistake' to make

Terry Richardson / Rolling Stone

Rihanna on Rolling Stone's cover.

By Rolling Stone

Rihanna has opened up like never before about getting back together with her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown, and what it means for her public image.

"I decided it was more important for me to be happy," she tells contributing editor Josh Eells in the new issue of Rolling Stone, out Friday, Jan. 31st. "I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that. Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."

On the Cover: Rihanna's crazy in love

The couple's public reconciliation comes less than four years since Brown assaulted Rihanna the night before the 2009 Grammy Awards. Brown plead guilty to assault and performed community service, but he remains on probation.

"When you add up the pieces from the outside, it's not the cutest puzzle in the world," Rihanna says. "You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it's different now. We don't have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about s---. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don't want to lose that."

From the Archives: Rihanna, Queen of Pain: Sexting, bad boys and her attraction to the dark side (2011)

And Rihanna says that if Brown were ever to display a hint of his past behavior towards her, she is ready to walk. "He doesn't have the luxury of f------ up again," she says. "That's just not an option. I can't say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I'm pretty solid in the knowing that he's disgusted by that. And I wouldn't have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility."

How Two Undergraduates Went From Forever Alone To Thousands In Sales

IMG_0717A team of undergraduates at Queens College in New York led by Matt Sconce had a semi-bright idea: they'd make Forever Alone statuettes. Matt Scone and sculptor Sanden Henning got together to make a 3D model of the famous Forever Alone face, a sad-eyed monstrosity familiar with those with no friends and those who like to suggest their friends have no friends. The face, to be clear, is wildly ugly yet poignant in its own special way. They decided to manufacture them. They started with a limited run of 30 and sold them for $80.

Beer's bitter compounds could help brew new medicines

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Researchers employing a century-old observational technique have determined the precise configuration of humulones, substances derived from hops that give beer its distinctive flavor.

That might not sound like a big deal to the average brewmaster, but the findings overturn results reported in scientific literature in the last 40 years and could lead to new pharmaceuticals to treat diabetes, some types of cancer and other maladies.

"Now that we have the right results, what happens to the bitter hops in the beer-brewing process makes a lot more sense," said Werner Kaminsky, a University of Washington research associate professor of chemistry.

Kaminsky is the lead author of a paper describing the findings, published this month in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

There is documentation that beer and its bittering acids, in moderation, have beneficial effects on diabetes, some forms of cancer, inflammation and perhaps even weight loss.

Kaminsky used a process called X-ray crystallography to figure out the exact structure of those acids, humulone molecules and some of their derivatives, produced from hops in the brewing process. That structure is important to researchers looking for ways to incorporate those substances, and their health effects, into new pharmaceuticals.

Humulone molecules are rearranged during the brewing process to contain a ring with five carbon atoms instead of six. At the end of the process two side groups are formed that can be configured in four different ways ? both groups can be above the ring or below, or they can be on opposite sides.

Which of the forms the molecule takes determines its "handedness," Kaminsky said, and that is important for understanding how a particular humulone will react with another substance. If they are paired correctly, they will fit together like a nut and bolt.

If paired incorrectly, they might not fit together at all or it could be like placing a right hand into a left-handed glove. That could produce disastrous results in pharmaceuticals.

Kaminsky cited thalidomide, which has a number of safe uses but was famously used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women in the late 1950s and early 1960s before it was discovered to cause birth defects. Molecule "handedness" in one form of the drug was responsible for the birth defects, while the orientation of molecules in another form did not appear to have the negative effects.

To determine the configuration of humulones formed in the brewing process, coauthors Jan Urban, Clinton Dahlberg and Brian Carroll of KinDex Therapeutics, a Seattle pharmaceutical firm that funded the research, recovered acids from the brewing process and purified them.

They converted the humulones to salt crystals and sent them to Kaminsky, who used X-ray crystallography ? a technique developed in the early 20th century ? to determine the exact configuration of the molecules.

"Now that we know which hand belongs to which molecule, we can determine which molecule goes to which bitterness taste in beer," Kaminsky said.

The authors point out that while "excessive beer consumption cannot be recommended to propagate good health, isolated humulones and their derivatives can be prescribed with documented health benefits."

Some of the compounds have been shown to affect specific illnesses, Kaminsky said, while some with a slight difference in the arrangement of carbon atoms have been ineffective.

The new research sets the stage for finding which of those humulones might be useful in new compounds to be used as medical treatments.

10 Foods to Avoid with Acid Reflux

Mike Barrett

foodburgerandfries 265x165 10 Foods to Avoid with Acid RefluxAn estimated 25 million American adults have acid reflux, or a severe form of heartburn, and experience the issue on a daily basis. More than 60 million suffer from heartburn once a month. And while simple overeating can be to blame, there are several foods that only exacerbate the condition and make it worse. Here you will learn of many foods to avoid with acid reflux.

Heartburn isn?t something to take lightly. In addition to the almost unbearable pain, the acid consistently irritating the esophagus can lead to lasting damage and increase your risk of esophageal cancer.

Interestingly, health professionals prescribe medications known as proton pump inhibitors to reduce the amount of acid build up when?the condition is actually caused by too little acid?in many cases, not too much acid. In some cases, the disorder is caused by a faulty valve between the stomach and the esophagus. However, in others, it is only made worse by diet.

?After food passes through your esophagus into your stomach, a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) closes, preventing?food or acid to move back up. Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the LES relaxes inappropriately, allowing acid from your?stomach to flow (reflux) backward into your esophagus.?

In addition to utilizing these 5 natural remedies for acid reflux, here are some foods to avoid when heartburn and acid reflux are a common problem:

  • Chocolate -?Apparently chocolate works to relax the sphincter muscle, allowing acids to flow back into the esophagus. But that isn?t the only reason it?s bad for acid reflux?it also contains the next thing on our list:
  • Caffeine -?Whether you get your daily jolt from coffee or soda, caffeine is a known contributor to acid reflux.
  • Soda -?The bubbles in soda can expand in the stomach, causing acids to back up. Sodas that are caffeinated are doubly bad.
  • Alcohol -?Like chocolate, alcohol relaxes the sphincter, allowing acid to flow freely. One drink may not be a problem, but when paired with other heartburn culprits, you?re only asking for greater pain.
  • Citrus fruits -?The acid content in these fruits are especially problematic when consumed on an empty stomach or when paired with other acidic foods.
  • Tomatoes -?While they are otherwise good for you, tomatoes are very acidic too.
  • Spicy foods - Among other foods to avoid with acid reflux, hot and spicy foods can make heartburn a problem. Simply swap out milder alternatives for the spicy dishes you like.
  • Fried and other high fat foods -?Fried foods are a common heartburn culprit, but even high fat dairy and meat products can be problematic for some sensitive people.
  • Meat ? Meat is one of the hardest foods to digest. Limit consumption and try to choose non-fatty meats like chicken or turkey.
  • Dairy ? Dairy may provide temporary relief, but it could also cause problems.

If acid reflux is a problem for you, learn your triggers and how best to avoid them. In the end, you will have to find out exactly which foods are OK, and which foods to avoid with acid reflux. Learn to know your body.

Here are some other tips on how to treat acid reflux naturally. Something as popular as ginger could help, or something very unknown, such as deglycyrrhizinated licorice, could help. It?s time to figure out what works for you.

Israel jets increase activity in Lebanese airspace

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Lebanese military said Wednesday that Israeli warplanes have sharply increased their activity over Lebanon in the past week, including at least 12 sorties in less than 24 hours in the country's south.

The flights come amid Israeli concerns about the civil war in neighboring Syria and fears that advanced weapons could reach hostile groups in Syria or the militant anti-Israel Hezbollah group in Lebanon.

Among Israeli security officials' chief fears is that Hezbollah could get its hands on Syrian chemical arms and SA-17 anti-aircraft missiles. If that were to happen, it would change the balance of power in the region and greatly hinder Israel's ability to conduct air sorties in Lebanon.

Israel believes that Damascus obtained a battery of SA-17s from Russia after an alleged Israeli airstrike in 2007 that destroyed an unfinished Syrian nuclear reactor.

Earlier this week, Israel moved a battery of its new "Iron Dome" rocket defense system to the northern city of Haifa, which was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire in the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war. The Israeli army called that move "routine."

A Lebanese army statement said the last of the sorties took place at 2 a.m. local time Wednesday. It said four warplanes which flew in over the southernmost coastal town of Naqoura hovered for several hours over villages in southern Lebanon before leaving Lebanese airspace.

It said similar flights by eight other warplanes were conducted Tuesday.

There was no immediate comment from Israel.

A Lebanese security official said the flights were part of "increased activity" in the past week but did not elaborate. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

The area of Lebanon where the flights took place borders southern Syria.

Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace are not uncommon and Lebanese authorities routinely lodge complaints at the U.N. against the flights.

UK ups offer for Mali, African anti-Islamist effort

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain on Tuesday boosted its offer of aid to help France fight Islamist rebels in Mali, and pledged troops to help other African governments in the region counter a rising tide of Islamist radicalism.

Up to 240 British troops could be deployed as part of two missions to train African troops, 40 in Mali as part of a European Union mission, and a further 200 in anglophone West African countries, Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman said.

At least 70 more British personnel could be involved in logistical and support missions. "It is an African operation in support of the Malian government and we think that the right way to do this is for regionally-led forces to take the lead," the spokesman said, adding Britons would take no combat role.

The increased logistical support for France includes a ferry to transport troops and equipment to Africa, and allowing France and its allies to use Britain for air-to-air refuelling.

Britain has also offered to set up a "Combined Joint Logistics Headquarters" in Mali, but France believes such a facility is not needed, Cameron's spokesman said, adding it would be kept under review.

A decision on whether to send up to 200 British soldiers on West African training missions is expected to be taken soon after African Union-led discussions in Addis Ababa, while talks are taking place in Brussels over troops for Mali.

Blackstone mulls sale of stake in London office complex

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. private equity group Blackstone may sell its half stake in a London office and retail complex, its partner British Land said, a deal that could bring Blackstone a sevenfold return on its original investment.

Blackstone bought its share of the 30-acre Broadgate site in London's financial district from property firm British Land in September 2009 for 77 million pounds ($120.9 million), a stake now valued at 520.5 million pounds after debt, according to British Land's 2012 annual report.

Reuters reported in September 2011 that Blackstone was considering a sale of its stake in Broadgate, which would be one of London's largest property transactions in recent years.

The process appears to have taken a step forward since a lock-up agreement expired late last year, allowing a sale to go ahead.

British Land publicly acknowledged that Blackstone could sell out of Broadgate on Tuesday, saying: "We intend to retain our 50 percent stake and work closely with Blackstone through any sale process".

British Land Chief Executive Chris Grigg said the original sale to Blackstone had enabled his company to rebalance its London portfolio between the City and the West End districts and press ahead with developments that will bring in large profits.

"One can always look back and say 'if I knew then what I know now', but we sold at the time to give us financial flexibility," Grigg told Reuters after a trading update on Tuesday.

Blackstone was not immediately available for comment.

"It was always strategically the right thing for British Land to cut its exposure to the City but I have always questioned the timing," said Investec analyst Alan Carter.

The Broadgate development, which is adjacent to Liverpool Street train station, was built between 1984 and 2008 and could attract interest from Oxford Properties, the property arm of Canada's Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System and Norway's sovereign wealth fund, property experts said.

Broadgate tenants include Swiss bank UBS, which is planning a 340 million pound London headquarters in Broadgate despite concerns it will struggle to fill the 700,000 building, which will include several trading floors, after deep job cuts.

"Predicting headcount in banking is something you can spend a lot of time fretting over," said British Land's Grigg. "From our point of view they have leased the whole building and my view is that it fits with their overall requirements."

British Land said a recent run of retailer failures across its portfolio including HMV and Jessops had pushed the number of units in administration to 1.2 percent from 0.8 percent at the end of 2012.

"There were a number of failures but they were principally failures we expected," said Grigg. "We have a great record of re-letting space."

His father, Alex Marrocco, said Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 that his son had the operation on Dec. 18, 2012 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig, File)

On Facebook, he describes himself as a "wounded warrior...very wounded."

Brendan Marrocco was the first soldier to survive losing all four limbs in the Iraq War, and doctors revealed Monday that he's received a double-arm transplant.

Those new arms "already move a little," he tweeted a month after the operation.

Marrocco, a 26-year-old New Yorker, was injured by a roadside bomb in 2009. He had the transplant Dec. 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, his father said Monday.

Alex Marrocco said his son does not want to talk with reporters until a news conference Tuesday at the hospital, but the younger Marrocco has repeatedly mentioned the transplant on Twitter and posted photos.

"Ohh yeah today has been one month since my surgery and they already move a little," Brendan Marrocco tweeted Jan. 18.

Responding to a tweet from NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski, he wrote: "dude I can't tell you how exciting this is for me. I feel like I finally get to start over."

The infantryman also received bone marrow from the same dead donor who supplied his new arms. That novel approach is aimed at helping his body accept the new limbs with minimal medication to prevent rejection.

The military sponsors operations like these to help wounded troops. About 300 have lost arms or hands in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Unlike a life-saving heart or liver transplant, limb transplants are aimed at improving quality of life, not extending it. Quality of life is a key concern for people missing arms and hands ? prosthetics for those limbs are not as advanced as those for feet and legs.

"He was the first quad amputee to survive," and there have been four others since then, Alex Marrocco said.

The Marroccos want to thank the donor's family for "making a selfless decision ... making a difference in Brendan's life," the father said.

Brendan Marrocco has been in public many times. During a July 4 visit last year to the Sept. 11 Memorial with other disabled soldiers, he said he had no regrets about his military service.

"I wouldn't change it in any way. ... I feel great. I'm still the same person," he said.

The 13-hour operation was led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Johns Hopkins. It was the seventh double-hand or double-arm transplant done in the United States.

Lee led three of those earlier operations when he worked at the University of Pittsburgh, including the only above-elbow transplant that had been done at the time, in 2010.

Marrocco's "was the most complicated one" so far, Lee said in an interview Monday. It will take more than a year to know how fully Marrocco will be able to use the new arms.

"The maximum speed is an inch a month for nerve regeneration," he explained. "We're easily looking at a couple years" until the full extent of recovery is known.

While at Pittsburgh, Lee pioneered the immune-suppression approach used for Marrocco. The surgeon led hand-transplant operations on five patients, giving them marrow from their donors in addition to the new limbs. All five recipients have done well, and four have been able to take just one anti-rejection drug instead of combination treatments most transplant patients receive.

Minimizing anti-rejection drugs is important because they have side effects and raise the risk of cancer over the long term. Those risks have limited the willingness of surgeons and patients to do more hand, arm and even face transplants.

Lee has received funding for his work from AFIRM, the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, a cooperative research network of top hospitals and universities around the country that the government formed about five years ago. With government money, he and several other plastic surgeons around the country are preparing to do more face transplants, possibly using the new immune-suppression approach.

Marrocco expects to spend three to four months at Hopkins, then return to a military hospital to continue physical therapy, his father said. Before the operation, he had been fitted with prosthetic legs and had learned to walk on his own.

He had been living with his older brother in a specially equipped home on New York's Staten Island that had been built with the help of several charities. Shortly after moving in, he said it was "a relief to not have to rely on other people so much."

The home was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Despite being in a lot of pain for some time after the operation, Marrocco showed a sense of humor, his father said. He had a hoarse voice from the tube that was in his throat during the long surgery and decided he sounded like Al Pacino. He soon started doing movie lines.

"He was making the nurses laugh," Alex Marrocco said.

Tips For Knowing The Right Credit Card Terminology | Paixao ...

TIP! Never use a password or pin code for your credit card that is really easy for people to figure out. Don?t use something obvious, like your birthday or your pet?s name, because that is information anyone could know.

Many people get frustrated with bank cards. If you have the right advice, you can easily deal with charge cards in a hassle-free way. Use the tips in this article to help you learn how to live responsibly with bank cards.

TIP! If you use credit cards, consider obtaining a free credit report every year. Check to ensure that all the information is correct.

Do not close too many credit accounts at once. It may be the initial reaction when you want to preserve the score of your credit, but it will actually have the opposite effect by making your score worse. When you close accounts, you reduce how much credit you have. This then closes the gap between the credit you can borrow and how much you currently owe.

TIP! It isn?t the best idea to get credit as soon as you turn 18 years old. Although people love to spend and have credit cards, you should truly understand how credit works before you decide to establish it.

Take time to go over your monthly statements. Be sure this is done as regularly as possible. If you are waiting too long, you probably won?t be able to recall transactions. Also, solving a problem is harder if you wait.

TIP! It can be hard to get a card if you are not at least 18 years old. The best way to start is to be an additional user on an existing account.

It is a good idea to review the receipt of all of your credit card purchases, and the time to do it is right at the check-out stand. If there are any corrections that need to be made, this can be done immediately.

TIP! Always know who you are dealing with and make sure they are legitimate companies when you give out your credit card information online. It makes sense to call the phone numbers given on the website to verify the seller?s existence, and it is wise to steer clear of sellers providing no street address.

Read the credit card agreement thoroughly before you sign your agreement with the company. A lot of credit card places think of your first purchase as your agreement to their terms. You should particularly go over the fine print, even though it may be difficult to read.

TIP! Be sure you ask a credit card company if they are willing to reduce how much interest you pay. Some companies will decrease the interest amount that they charge to their customers if these people maintain a good relationship with them for a long period of time.

Know your credit card laws to ensure that you are protected. Creditors are not allowed to raise rates retroactively. The companies are also not allowed to bill in a double-cycle. Study the laws and keep up with the changes. There have been two major changes in the laws. You should read up on them to familiarize yourself.

TIP! Make sure to get your credit card payments in on time. Missing one payment can cause higher interest rates for you.

As you can see by now, credit card companies cause people a lot of grief. Choosing a good card is easier with research and advice. By using these suggestions, you can enjoy life with charge cards and avoid the headaches!

Successful Salespeople Have Moderate Temperaments

Cover Image: January 2013 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

The most gregarious salespeople are not the most successful

Image: JOSH GOSFIELD Corbis

Store managers and psychologists have long believed that outgoing individuals make the best salespeople. Yet research now suggests that extroverts are actually less successful at making sales than people with more moderate social temperaments. Adam Grant, associate professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, gave personality tests to 340 salespeople and compared their extroversion scores to their yearly revenue. Those who scored exactly halfway between the poles of extreme extroversion and extreme introversion?whom Grant calls ?ambiverts??earned 24 percent more than the introverts and, surprisingly, 32 percent more than the extroverts.

Grant?who is a self-described ambivert and a former salesman himself?says he is not sure why such individuals perform better, but it may be that ?they're less likely to get distracted and to talk too much?they find the right balance between talking and listening.? In addition, extroverted salespeople may sometimes be too pushy and turn potential buyers off.

Next, Grant plans to investigate whether successful ambiverts are always socially even-keeled or whether they tend to fluctuate between extroversion and introversion depending on factors such as mood or the temperament of their customers.

Odds grim for native plants fighting invaders

Invasive species are winning in the battle for survival against some native plants in a California reserve, according to a new study.

The research has troubling implications for plant hardiness, the scientists studying the plants said. While some researchers have believed the invaders merely supplement the native ecosystem, the new findings, published online earlier this month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that a few of the original plants could die out in a few hundred years.

"What we see is a serious invasion, meaning that as one or more invasive species start to become abundant, the native plants shrink down in their habitat," said ecologist Benjamin Gilbert, who did field research during a temporary appointment at the University of California. He is currently with the University of Toronto.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Winter's big chill means fewer summer bugs

As the bitter cold in the northeastern United States keeps even hardy New Hampshire skiers off the slopes, there?s at least one potential upside to the cold snap: fewer mosquitoes come summer, according to an entomologist riding out the cold in upstate New York.

    2. Brains vs. immunity: Genes hint at tug of war
    3. Study: Fracking wastewater could be too much
    4. Shrinking proton: Particle is smaller than thought

Among other experiments, Gilbert and co-author Jonathan Levine planted plots of several native species, including the native flower Lasthenia californica, at the Sedgwick Reserve in the Santa Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara. Researchers then observed the plants' growth and modelled the long-term trend for the plants' survival based on the experimental results.

Researchers ran several experiments looking at plant survival rates, planting seeds among exotic and native grasses. In this example, they added the native annual flower Lastenia californica to native bunchgrass, Stipa pulchra.

In general, Levine and Gilbert noted that the seedlings did not do very well in areas dominated by "exotic" grasses, such as Avena fatua, and that the population sizes of the native species are shrinking to critical levels.

Researchers have found that the number of total species in an area increases as exotics take hold and natives cling on to life. However, the native species are restricted to small "refugia," or isolated populations, located far apart from each other, which could hurt their long-term survival, Gilbert said.

Such isolated patches make the plants are more susceptible to damage frombeing hurt by disease or fire; plus, it's harder for them to disperse seeds.

"The native species are pushed out of the best habitat," Gilbert told OurAmazingPlanet. "The analogy for people is being taken off a really good diet ? it's getting them by, [but] it's not optimal."

Native species that have adapted to more challenging environments, such as rocky conditions, tend to fare better. "In this case, the only reason the natives seem to do well in these patches is it is so crappy for the invasives," Gilbert said.

As for protecting the native species, pesticides sometimes do more harm than good. It might be more effective, Gilbert suggested, to create a "corridor" of suitable habitat between patches of native species, which would help them again colonize larger areas.

One challenge, though, is that most of the native species develop naturally in small areas, although the invasives push them to sites that are much smaller than usual. This makes it difficult to study the impact of invasive species or to encourage the natural grasses and flowers to expand their habitats.

Philly priest-abuse case in hands of jury

(AP) ? The credibility of a 24-year-old heroin addict whose sex-abuse complaint took down a Roman Catholic church official in Philadelphia ? and helped bring thousands of secret church files to light ? is now in the hands of a jury.

The policeman's son came forward in 2009 with the stunning claim that he'd been raped as a boy by two priests and his sixth-grade teacher. A jury heard two weeks of evidence before deliberations in the case began Friday.

One priest facing five other complaints accepted a plea deal on the eve of trial and went to prison, yet denies any contact with the trial accuser. The remaining defendants, the Rev. Charles Engelhardt, 66, of Wyndmoor, and ex-teacher Bernard Shero, 49, of Levittown, have staked their case on the accuser. He's changed his story several times, in significant ways, since the disclosure.

In closing arguments Friday, prosecutor Mark Cipolletti pointed out the many civil lawyers in court representing financial interests of the Philadelphia archdiocese, Engelhardt's religious order, the accuser and others.

"That room is littered with lawyers," Cipolletti told jurors, pointing to the galley, where the gaunt, hollow-eyed accuser sat with his parents and fiancee.

"Ok, so he sued the archdiocese," Cipolletti said. "Who can blame him?"

The young man testified that the abuse started when Engelhardt caught him drinking altar wine in fifth grade. The priest showed him pornography, he said, and weeks later raped him in the sacristy, a church anteroom that connects with the parish school.

The 10-year-old, though small for his age, warned Engelhardt that if the priest touched him again, he would kill him, according to his testimony. Engelhardt never did, he said.

But he said Engelhardt told fellow priest Edward Avery about their "session," prompting Avery to twice assault the boy, and force him to perform a striptease act. A year later, Shero drove the boy home after detention, and raped him in a parking lot, he said.

"No dollar amount could fix this, and never could," Cipolletti argued.

Central details of the accuser's testimony last week differed from the account he first gave the archdiocese in 2009. He told the social worker he'd been raped for five hours by Engelhardt after Mass; beaten and tied with sashes by Avery; and raped by Shero at school.

"(He) is the walking, talking personification of reasonable doubt," defense lawyer Michael McGovern, who represents Engelhardt, argued Friday.

Shero's lawyer, in closings a day earlier, described his visually-impaired client as an easy target who'd been taunted by classmates growing up and by his own students as an adult. That portrait led Cipolletti to wonder why he went into teaching.

Reminding jurors of the big picture, McGovern urged jurors to resist the "groundswell presumption of guilt throughout this country" when priests are accused of molesting children.

Thousands of people have accused Catholic priests around the country of abuse, but the complaints were routinely locked in "secret archives," according to evidence that's emerged in litigation over the past decade. Several states, including Pennsylvania, have since extended the time limit for child sex-abuse victims to pursue criminal or civil action.

Philadelphia prosecutors saw their chance with the policeman's son, whose claims were still viable under the new statutes.

And because Avery had been transferred to the boy's parish despite an earlier, credible abuse complaint, they could charge Monsignor William Lynn, the secretary for clergy at the archdiocese, with child endangerment.

Lynn, 62, was convicted last year and is serving three to six years in prison.

India mulls raising taxes on the rich ? Chidambaram comments ...

Chidambaram 300x198 India mulls raising taxes on the rich Chidambaram comments ahead of budgetNEW DELHI/MUMBAI: India should consider the argument for higher taxes on the ?very rich?, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said in comments likely to fuel speculation about steps he may take in next month?s budget to boost tax flows and narrow a yawning fiscal gap.

In an offthe- record pre-budget meeting with Chidambaram and Finance Ministry officials on Jan. 7, some economists pressed for higher taxes on the rich to make sure they are paying their fair share, alarming business lobby groups that warn such a move would stifle growth.

The Indian finance minister?s comments come against the backdrop of a global debate, from the United States to France, about whether the very wealthy pay enough taxes. The growth rate of Asia?s third-largest economy is widely expected to slip to a decade-low in fiscal 2012/13 as the government grapples with ballooning budget and current account deficits and high inflation. Chidambaram wants to plug holes in the nation?s finances by cutting expenditure and increasing revenues through improved tax collection. ?I think we should have stability in tax rates but we should consider the argument that very rich should be asked to pay a little more on some occasions, but that is not the view I am expressing. That is simply the argument I have heard and I am repeating,? Chidambaram said in a TV interview aired yesterday.

Chidambaram offered no definition of the ?very rich?, but his comments are likely to please many in his centre-left Congress party who feel recent reforms to further liberalize the economy favor corporate India at the expense of the common man. The Congress party is facing a tough fight to hold on to power in a series of state elections this year and general elections due by May 2014. ?It is good electoral politics but economically doesn?t make sense,? said Venugopal Dhoot, who controls India?s diversified Videocon Group and ranks 38th in Forbes? India rich list with a net worth of $1.5 billion. It was not immediately clear if Chidambaram was referring to higher taxes on income, assets or capital gains in a regime that currently makes India a good place for the rich to live.

At present the top income tax rate is 30 percent, which applies to earnings above 1.0 million rupees ($18,500) a year. There are just 35 million taxpayers in a country of 1.2 billion people, and of them about 1.5 million declare annual earnings of more than 1.0 million rupees, according to the Finance Ministry. There is no inheritance tax, an issue Chidambaram raised as a concern after being appointed finance minister last August.

In 2009, his predecessor withdrew a 10 percent surcharge on the 30-percent rate paid on earnings above 1.0 million rupees. A government official with direct knowledge of the debate in the Finance Ministry said the focus is on plugging loopholes in the collection of income tax paid by individuals and companies. ?There are options of revisiting the inheritance tax and surcharge on income tax paid by the individuals,? the official said, declining to say if these were firm proposals on the table for the budget to be unveiled around the end of February. ?Even if they bring (back) the surcharge that will only add about 15-20 billion rupees, which is a drop in the ocean and will be lost in the decline of tax revenues that will arise due to lower compliance if tax rates are raised,? said Surjit Bhalla, chairman of advisory firm Oxus Investments.

India?s richest people tend to own businesses and other assets and thus have comparatively little exposure to salaries tax. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, for example, was paid salary and perks of 150 million rupees ($2.8 million) in the last fiscal year by Reliance Industries, which he controls. According to Forbes, Ambani is worth $21 billion. Similarly, Azim Premji, founder of India?s No 3 software exporter, Wipro Ltd, and India?s third-richest person with a net worth of $1.2 billion, took home a salary and allowances of $84,696 in the last financial year, less than half of what the company?s chief financial officer was paid.

Premji said at a gathering of business leaders in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday that in principle he was not against higher taxes for the wealthy.? Reuters

Promising prognostic marker for aggressive breast cancer

Jan. 23, 2013 ? A team of researchers led by Goutham Narla, MD, PhD, at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and collaborators at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Erasmus Medical Center, have discovered a gene variant that drives the spread of breast cancer. Published in Science Translational Medicine, the study lays the early foundation for predicting which breast cancer patients may develop more aggressive disease and for designing more effective treatments.

"Breast cancer is a genetically complex disease and it remains a challenge to predict disease outcomes and which patients may benefit from more aggressive treatment," says Dr. Narla, assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and medical geneticist at UH Case Medical Center Seidman Cancer Center. "Our research has uncovered a promising gene marker that will not only help us better identify tumors that behave badly but provide a basis for developing and 'personalizing' therapies to better treat our patients."

The research team discovered that a mutant gene, KLF6-SV1, was linked to the recurrence and metastasis in women with breast cancer. The incorrect splicing of the KLF6 gene essentially creates a protein that causes cancer cells to spread or metastasize. The researchers examined the tumors of 671 breast cancer patients in a tumor bank at Erasmus University Medical Center (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and found that those whose tumors expressed high levels of the gene variant were 50 percent more likely to die. Since recurrence and metastasis are the major causes of death in breast cancer, this finding will provide a new direction of research to both identify women at risk and to develop targeted drugs that block the process of metastasis.

"This study presents biological proof that this splice variant can potentially be a marker for determining which early stage breast cancer patients will have disease progression," adds Dr. Narla. "More studies need to be done, but this could provide an important prognostic marker to determine which patients need to be treated more aggressively or watched more closely."

Dr. Narla came to UH Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve in spring, 2012, from Mt. Sinai and is the first Harrington Distinguished Scholar (Early Career Award). This inaugural award provides physician-scientists with the ability to tap into grant funding and a peer network of innovators and mentors within the infrastructure of the Harrington Discovery Institute at UH Case Medical Center. The Institute is part of the $250 million Harrington Project for Discovery & Development, which was launched in February, 2012, with a $50 million gift to UH from the Harrington family of Hudson, OH.

Dr. Narla's laboratory focuses on the identification and characterization of the genes and pathways involved in cancer metastasis. By studying the functional role of the KLF6 tumor suppressor gene, Dr. Narla and his team have identified new signaling pathways regulated by this gene family thus providing new insight into cancer diagnosis and treatment. The team's research found that KLF6 and FOXO1, both tumor suppressor genes, are turned off as cancer spreads through the body. Since first discovering the KLF6 gene 13 years ago as a medical student at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in the laboratory of Dr. Scott Friedman, Dr. Narla has been involved in the identification and characterization of the gene and its role in cancer development.

"In this new research as well as previous studies, Goutham and his team have uncovered important and previously unrecognized genetic markers in cancer," said Stanton Gerson, MD, Director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UH Case Medical Center Seidman Cancer Center. "This work highlights how understanding the basic mechanisms regulating cancer development and progression can lead to significant advances in the treatment of cancer. We are so pleased to have a physician-scientist of his caliber at our cancer center and are excited about the impact of this important work."

Dr. Narla will work with the breast cancer team, led by Lyndsay Harris, MD, to study further KLF6-SV1's potential as a prognostic marker for patients with poor outcomes. The group also will work to develop novel therapeutics that can turn the protein off and cause the cells to become less aggressive.

"We look forward to continuing this work to further define the role of KLF6-SV1 on the molecular basis of tumor progression and metastasis in breast cancer," says Dr. Harris, Director of the Breast Cancer Program at UH Case Medical Center and Professor, Medicine-Hematology/Oncology at the School of Medicine. "These findings provide us with a biomarker of more aggressive disease and a target for new therapies. This will potentially enable us to develop more "personalized" treatments for patients and thereby reduce breast cancer mortality."

This work was supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Additional support for Dr. Narla's research comes from the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University Institute for Transformative Molecular Medicine, and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Narla is also supported by an early physician scientist career award from the HHMI.

MIAMI (CBS4) ? It?s not every day a 10 year old girl gets to walk in a high fashion runway show in front of thousands of people. But, Briana Vega is no ordinary 10 year old.

Briana is fighting leukemia, a diagnosis she received?just after her 10th birthday. She?s being treated at Miami Children?s Hospital and is now their Ambassador.

In October 2012, Briana was speaking at another event, and that?s when designer Ren? Ruiz heard her story.

?When I saw her speak and felt her love and her energy, I couldn?t just help but think I could do to something help her. I wanted to give her something special,? said Ruiz.

So?Ruiz offered to create a custom designed couture?dress for Briana with her help.

?It was really good because I got to design my own dress and add straps. It was fun,? said Briana.

Ruiz made Briana??Supermodel of the Day? ?at The Multiple Sclerosis Society?s 30th Anniversary luncheon held Wednesday in Miami.

Briana rocked?the runway in a turquoise knee length show stopper along with models wearing?his spring 2013 line.

For Briana?s Dad, watching his baby girl strut her stuff was the quite the moment.

?I?m so proud of her!? said Humberto Vega. ?As a parent it?s the best you can hope for?your daughter.?

One of this year?s honorees is?Alie Rothman, who created ?Alie?s Fund? after she was diagnosed with MS at age 14?and underwent open-heart surgery. Alie?s Fund allocates funds to children based on their specific needs -

The two young women are reaching out beyond their own issues?to give a name and face to causes that need all the help they can get.

?The?important thing is to?to keep our heads up,? said Rothman. ?There will be a cure in our lifetime.?

?Even though something bad happens to you it?s doesn?t mean it?s the end of the world,??said Briana.

Siemens earnings down 12 percent in fiscal Q1

BERLIN (AP) ? Industrial conglomerate Siemens AG says its net earnings declined 12 percent in the October-December quarter as revenue edged slightly higher, new orders declined and the company took one-time charges ? some related to the solar power business it is selling.

The company said Wednesday that it earned ?1.21 billion ($1.6 billion) in its fiscal first quarter, compared with ?1.38 billion a year earlier. Revenue climbed 2 percent to ?18.13 billion from ?17.86 billion.

However, orders dropped 3 percent to ?19.14 billion from ?19.72 billion. CEO Peter Loescher cautioned: "for the rest of the year as well, we don't expect any tailwinds from the global economy."

Siemens said a ?150 million loss at the solar business contributed to the net profit decline. Its transport business also took charges of 116 million.

Daily Kos: Ohio Board of Education president totally not comparing ...

We need more guns around because if you think otherwise, you're kinda like Hitler. That seems to be the message the gun fetishist crowd has coalesced around, because logic is for suckers:
[Ohio] State Board of Education President Debe Terhar said she was not comparing President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler when she posted a photograph of the Nazi leader on her Facebook page with a message critical of the administration?s new gun-control efforts. ?[?]

Terhar, a Cincinnati Republican elected last week by the 19-member school board to a second term as its president, recently posted the picture with this commentary: ?Never forget what this tyrant said: ?To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.? ? Adolf Hitler.?

Fear not, though, because Terhar says she didn't mean it like that:
?I?m not comparing the president to Adolf Hitler,? she said. ?It?s the thought of disarming citizens, and this has happened throughout history. What?s the true intention of the Second Amendment? It was to protect us from a tyrannical government, God forbid.?
See there? It's not that Obama is like Hitler for not wanting more guns in schools, it's just that that's like something a tyrannical dictator would do, right before gassing people or right after invading Poland. (Hitler was also against drinking lead paint straight from the can, which is why all true patriot meetups start with chugging a glass of whatever-someone-found-in-their-garage-that-week.)

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings have left the gun fetishist crowd absolutely befuddled. Their identity revolves around protecting themselves from imaginary future tyranny; the best argument they can muster as to why your kids and mine have to be continually exposed to batshit crazy people with personal arsenals is that we need those batshit crazy people with arsenals around, because non-batshit crazy people just aren't attuned enough to all the damn tyranny that's coming out of the woodwork, and haven't probably honed themselves as anti-tyranny killing machines.

Have you noticed? Almost every one of the most avid gun fetishists out there, the people appearing on teevee to yell at the hosts about freedom and the like, all argue that they need absolutely unfettered gun freedom because they may at some point need to start shooting at our government. All our efforts at basic public safety are running afoul of a very small, obsessively paranoid crowd whose rationale is that we need to enable widespread mass murder, just in case it comes in handy someday. You know ? if they ever feel like it.

These are the people who really need their guns taken away. Not even a close question.
