Hurricane brought Macondo oil back to Gulf surface, tests show

Hurricane Isaac's blast in the Gulf of Mexico pushed oil from the Macondo spill back to the surface, researchers show.

University researchers confirmed that oil from the BP Plc. (NYSE: BP) Macondo spill have been found on the beaches of Louisiana, brought back to surface level after Hurricane Isaac blew through the area.

The samples of oil were tested at Louisiana State University by Ed Overton, a professor emeritus in the Department of Environmental Sciences, the Associated Press reports.

Overton said the samples, which were found on Elmer?s Island and Grand Isle in Louisiana, were both ?good solid matches on Macondo oil.?

The Associated Press reports that BP has previously said it would work to clean up oil that surfaces in Isaac?s wake.

Bloomberg previously reported that Isaac could stir up to 1 million barrels of oil that had been embedded in sediment in the Gulf of Mexico.

But Overton said the resurfaced oil is not an indication that the Gulf of Mexico is suffering from the same environmental damage caused by the original Macondo spill two years ago.

Overton told the Associated Press that the difference between the amount of resurfaced oil from Isaac?s blast and the oil from the Macondo spill is ?night and day.?
