Internet Promotion And You: How To Promote Your Business Online

One of the best ways that people have been generating a higher income these days is via Internet marketing. That said, many don?t know how to start marketing online, but this article can help with the basics. You will find the advice you need by reading the article below.

Usually you want to avoid mixing your business into your personal life. However, this is one of the few exceptions. The reason is, because you don?t have as much pressure put on you, therefore, this can be seen as a hobby. Involving your spouse can make the hard work more of a team effort.

Include the word ?limited? in your ad. People shopping online want something different than what is sold at local stores. They want something unique and different. Customers will feel that ?limited edition? products are special, and will be more likely to buy them.

Find out common complaints and you might find the perfect niche. How can this be? By focusing on complaints, it?s easy to discover problems that need solving. Once you have thought of a few problems in your areas of interest, you can then begin to think of some solutions. With this approach, you can find your perfect niche, and generate a mission statement to boot.

You can assess the results of online marketing campaigns with sophisticated programs that measure the sales versus the number of visitors to your site. Many companies have tools that you can install on your web server to track visitor behavior.

Make use of emphasis coding on your website. Increase the strength of a word or phrase with bold, underlined or italicized text. This allows visitors to instantaneously perceive the content?s primary message and to clarify your objective.

Customize your site for worldwide access. Do this by translating your site into a variety of languages. This can expand your global audience significantly and quite possibly send sales soaring. When the customer can read your site in their native language, they will be more likely to buy from you.

You need to be willing to put in a bit of time to learn the basics of website design. There is a wealth of information on the Internet to help you learn CSS, HTML, and other web design specifics. Try and dedicate 30 minutes a day and in a few weeks you should know some good basics to apply to your webpage.

Strategic placement of ads is the cornerstone of Online marketing. This can be done through companies like Google?s AdSense. This is a great way to achieve a big bang for a small buck.

Use a variety of marketing techniques when you are first beginning to build your business to discover which methods work best for your company. Customers can be contacted by phone, fax or email to inform them of your services and specials. There are many resources for gaining contact information, such as the yellow pages, online or offline.

Do everything possible to make sure that your site?s content remains up-to-date. Outdated information will make you look lazy and unprofessional, reducing your chance at a sale. Fresh, new content will attract readers and increase your ranking within the search engines, too.

A good tip for your site is to have a place where customers can interact with one another. This helps your site feel like a group or club instead of simply a place to purchase items. People enjoy being part of groups and clubs so treating them as if they are part of a select group will keep them coming back to your site.

Change your content around so your customers feel like they are controlling things. This is an effective marketing strategy. Make certain they know participating is actually an option and it will help your credibility.

A small useful freebie branded with your name and site can be a valuable way to attract customers. For instance, if you come up with a free e-book, make sure to submit it to other websites that host free e-books. There are many websites that offer articles, e-zines, e-books, and general freebies that you can submit to.

Be charitable. Find a charity that interests your audience and give a portion of your profits to it. Not only will your charity provide you with a free advertisement, it will also enhance your public image. You could get even more creative by picking a few charities from which your customers can choose to support.

It is now time to start thinking about the goals of your Web marketing campaign. It is important you set goals for yourself in the short and long term that you feel it is possible to achieve. If you are constantly setting goals for yourself and learning new information, soon enough your Website marketing efforts will be a success

A creamy vegetable soup with no cream or butter

Years ago, when I was pregnant with my kids, all the advice books swore that smart moms-to-be made sure to eat broccoli three times a day.

It seemed a bit extreme to me, but I went with it. It wasn't that hard. I've always loved broccoli, even if it does have an unfortunate aroma. It's an excellent source of protein, calcium, iron, dietary fiber and many vitamins and minerals. And eating it three times a day when I was pregnant did not kill my affection for it after I gave birth.

It helps that it's easy to cook, too. Broccoli does well steamed, roasted, grilled or sauteed. You can also boil it, of course, as long as you don't overdo it, which not only chases away all the nutrients and turns the vegetable to mush, but also amps up that funky smell. Bottom line ? broccoli is hearty and full-bodied. It can be the main actor in any meal.

Which is why broccoli is the star of this substantial stick-to-your-ribs soup for fall. To be sure, there's some Canadian bacon in it, adding flavor, but it plays only a supporting role. Pork in all its forms, especially regular old bacon, is the darling of many chefs these days. But I don't add it willy-nilly to every recipe, not least because of its fattiness.

Canadian bacon, by contrast, delivers that same smoky taste ? reminiscent of the hearth and fall leaves burning ? without a ton of calories. Canadian bacon actually is smoked pork loin, one of the leanest parts of the pig, and has no relation to regular bacon, which comes from the fatty belly.

And just as this soup boasts smokiness without a lot of bacon fat, it is thick and creamy without any butter, cream or flour. The trick? Pureeing the vegetables.

Any soup with enough vegetables will be creamy when you puree it. And just about any vegetable will work, though I'll admit I smuggled in a single Yukon gold potato to assist the broccoli in this recipe. And by the way, a soup without a lot of cream or butter will not only be leaner, it also will taste that much more vividly of the vegetables with which it is made. Cream and butter, much as I love them, tend to tamp down flavor.

The best tool to puree these vegetables is a blender. But if all you have on hand is a food processor or an immersion blender, don't worry. The finished soup won't be quite as silky smooth, but it'll still be delicious. And to save time and money, I've used every part of the broccoli. I roasted 3 cups of the florets and added them at the end to add crunch and color to the soup.

I hope you will consider this mostly vegetable soup a suitable candidate for the main course at dinner. With some grilled or toasted country bread and a green salad on the side, I promise you will be plenty satisfied.

SMOKY CREAM OF BROCCOLI SOUP WITH SHARP CHEDDAR

Start to finish: 45 minutes

Servings: 4 mains or 8 starters

2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided

3/4 pound Canadian bacon, chopped

1 medium yellow onion, sliced (about 1 cup)

2 pounds fresh broccoli (4 cups small florets set aside, the rest, including the stalks, trimmed of tough skin and coarsely chopped)

1 small Yukon gold potato (about 6 ounces), scrubbed and thinly sliced

5 cups low-sodium chicken broth

Kosher salt and ground black pepper

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, or to taste

2 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, coarsely grated

Heat the oven to 450 F.

In a large saucepan over medium, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil. Add the bacon and cook, stirring, for 6 to 8 minutes, or until slightly golden. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the bacon to a bowl and set aside.

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add another tablespoon of the oil and the onion to the pan, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is softened. Add the coarsely chopped broccoli (not the florets), potato and chicken broth. Bring the broth to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, partially covered, for 20 minutes, stirring every so often, or until the broccoli and potatoes are very tender.

Meanwhile, on a rimmed baking sheet toss the florets with the remaining 2 teaspoons oil. Season with salt and pepper, then spread in an even layer. Roast in the top third of the oven for 5 minutes, or until lightly caramelized.

When the vegetables in the soup are tender, transfer the soup to a blender and puree, in batches, until smooth. Be careful and only fill the blender a third full each time.

Return the soup to the saucepan, along with the roasted broccoli florets and the Canadian bacon. Add the lemon juice, then season with salt and pepper. Add water, if necessary, to achieve the desired texture. Ladle the soup into 4 shallow soup bowls and top each portion with some of the cheddar.

Google Field Trip serves as virtual tour guide

23 hrs.

Google's new Field Trip app is a virtual local tour guide that's always running in the background. It pops up interesting local information???from local history and architecture to the best restaurants and shopping???without you having to ask for it.

After you choose whether you want just occasional notifications or frequent ones, Field Trip runs quietly in the background, looking for anything notable around you. The app pulls in information from a ton of sources, including Zagat and Eater in the food and drinks category; Architizer for architecture; and The Worldwide Guide to Movie Locations and Atlas Obscura for unique (and possibly bizarre) finds.

When it finds something, Field Trip notifies you with a ringtone and/or vibration. It can even read the title and description to you. View the event, place, or thing on a map and read more about it within the app. You can also choose to get more or fewer notifications from individual sources.

The Android?app has a really pleasant interface and definitely encourages you to step out and go explore (as the video above suggests). Google says the app is like having a local friend with you as you explore a city. You can download this virtual friend on Google Play now; an iOS version is coming soon.?

NOTE:?If Google Play?says?your phone is incompatible, it might not really be. I got the incompatibility warning too on my Galaxy S2, but was able to download it directly from the phone and it works!

Geraldo: 'Benghazi-Gate' Scandal Is A 'Cancer On The Presidency ...

video

Geraldo Rivera appeared on Fox & Friends where he slammed President Barack Obama?s administration for misleading the American people as to their level of knowledge about the attacks on a consulate in Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans. After saying last week that the administration was probably being ?disingenuous,? Rivera now said that it was clear the administration knew that they were not telling the truth by the weekend after the attacks. He said the ?scandal? represents a ?cancer on the presidency.?

RELATED: Geraldo And Eric Bolling Trade Barbs Over Administration?s Handling Of Libya Attack

Eric Bolling recounted how he and Rivera fought last week over the political impact of the mischaracterization of the attacks in Libya by members of the Obama administration. Rivera conceded that, by Sunday when U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice went on the Sunday talk shows the weekend after the attacks, it was known that the Libya attack was terrorism.

?The reason we call it ?Benghazi-gate? is because it contains the grim prospect that the administration knew or should have known the true nature [of the attacks],? said Rivera before Bolling cut him off.

?Bret Baier reported last night that he had two credible sources saying that within 24 hours of those attacks that killed four people, the administration knew,? said Bolling.

Rivera said that 24 hours is requiring too much of the Obama administration. ?You have to be fair,? he said. ?It doesn?t change the nature of the scandal. It is the biggest foreign policy blunder ? It is the only chink in the armor of the Obama administration. As they surge in these polls, this is the one cancer on the presidency.?

Gretchen Carlson became frustrated when she said that it was unlikely that the average American knew the full extent of the cover up of information the administration had on Libya.

?Clearly when U.N. Ambassador Rice spoke on the Sunday talk shows, they could not not have known that this was an act of terror by that point,? said Rivera.

?I don?t understand how they can get away with this and there be no repercussions,? Carlson asked.

?I don?t think they?re getting away with it at all,? Rivera concluded.

Carnivorous plant catapults prey with snap-tentacles: Biologists describe new capture mechanism

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Carnivorous plants feature complex mechanisms to survive in habitats poor in nutrients: trapping systems help them to lure, catch, kill, and digest small prey animals (mainly insects) and to take up the resulting nutrients. Traps that move are termed 'active', and such active systems are currently being investigated in the Plant Biomechanics Group of the Botanic Garden Freiburg, led by Prof. Thomas Speck.

In the PhD project of Simon Poppinga, the researchers show for the first time the trapping action of the particular sundew Drosera glanduligera, which was accomplished in close collaboration with the private cultivators Siegfried and Irmgard Hartmeyer. The spectacular capture movement has been investigated biophysically, and the findings are published in the journal PLOS ONE.

Sundews are commonly known for their trap leafs being covered with sticky tentacles to which small prey animals stick to and become wrapped within minutes up to hours. The Round-Leaved Sundew Drosera rotundifolia, which is native to nutrient-poor bogs also in the Black Forest, possesses such a flypaper-trap. Additionally to these glue-tentacles, Australian Drosera glanduligera features non-sticky snap-tentacles that bend towards the trap centre within 75 milliseconds after mechanical stimulation, which is faster than the snap-trapping action of the famous Venus Flytrap. The function of these tentacles was subject to speculation until now. It could be shown that the snap-tentacles catapult incautious prey animals onto the sticky trap leaf, and that this sundew hence possesses a combined catapult-flypaper-trap.

Carnivorous plants enjoy great popularity worldwide. Although the trapping mechanism described here can surely be termed one of the most spectacular plant movements, only few persons will be able to see it with their own eyes due to the very tough cultivation and short life span of the plant. All the others can follow a documentary about this research project on YouTube:

Affirmative action, rights cases await U.S. Supreme Court

(Reuters) - Affirmative action for minorities, human rights abuses and the constitutional authority for dogs to sniff out crime will top the U.S. Supreme Court's agenda when it returns to the bench on Monday. An even bigger issue, same-sex marriage, lurks on the horizon.

The new term marks the full court's first return to the public eye since June when Chief Justice John Roberts surprised many by joining four more liberal justices in a 5-4 decision that upheld nearly all of President Barack Obama's healthcare law.

The court will start with one of its most anticipated cases, Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum, and address for the second time the extent to which American judges are empowered to hear lawsuits over human rights atrocities abroad.

On October 10, it will hear perhaps the biggest case on the docket so far, Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, and weigh whether using race in undergraduate admissions to increase diversity is still acceptable under the U.S. Constitution.

"When you look at Kiobel and Fisher, and the possibility the court will visit the issues of gay marriage and voting rights, it's already shaping up to be a momentous term," said Ted Shaw, a professor at Columbia Law School and former director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

Some justices said over the summer break that the court would, as it normally does, move past the divisions that end a term, including this year over a tough Arizona immigration law.

Dissenting justices in that and the healthcare cases read parts of their opinions from the bench, signaling profound disagreement with the majorities.

The court often finds common ground, and last term it ruled unanimously nearly as often as not. But many closely watched cases still produce 5-4 ideological splits. The five more conservative justices were appointed by Republican presidents, and the four more liberal justices by Democratic presidents.

While Justice Anthony Kennedy is at the ideological center, Roberts' vote to uphold most of the Affordable Care Act was a forceful reminder of his capacity to put his own cast on the law. At age 57, he could do so for another quarter century.

"John Roberts enormously strengthened his administrative hand and legal influence in ruling as he did," said Douglas Kmiec, a constitutional law professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. "Now both sides probably believe they need to work for his support, and that's an enviable position for the chief justice."

The court already has accepted close to 40 cases for the new term, filling roughly half of its usual docket.

RACE AS A FACTOR

In Kiobel, the court will again review the Alien Tort Statute, a long-obscure 1789 law that lawyers have used in the last three decades to challenge corporations' alleged aiding or acquiescing in foreign governments' abuse of their own people.

After hearing arguments in February, the court decided to hold a new hearing to address whether judges could hear such claims brought against anyone, not just corporations.

The case has drawn dozens of briefs from other interested parties. The Obama administration has argued that the law could be used, case-by-case, for claims of abuse that might interfere with U.S. foreign relations or respect for human rights.

In the affirmative action case, Texas' flagship university has for several years filled about three-quarters of its undergraduate class by granting automatic admission to students in the top 10 percent of their high-school classes.

While this "race-neutral" approach has boosted the number of black and Hispanic students because of the homogeneity of many high schools, Texas uses race as one factor to fill the rest of each class, with a goal of improving the educational experience.

This has been challenged, and changes in the Supreme Court's makeup may imperil the 2003 decision, Grutter v. Bollinger, that let universities take race into account to improve diversity.

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who in that case endorsed race-based admissions at the University of Michigan law school, retired in 2006 and was replaced by the more conservative Justice Samuel Alito.

In addition, Justice Elena Kagan, who was U.S. solicitor general before joining the court in 2010, has recused herself. This could make it hard for Texas to win more than four votes. A decision voiding the program would likely apply, under a different law, to private universities.

Also on the docket are two "dog sniff" cases from Florida that test the boundary of Fourth Amendment protection against illegal searches, and which the court will take up on October 31.

One, Florida v. Jardines, concerns whether a homeowner's privacy was violated when a trained narcotics dog named Franky was allowed to walk near a home, and appeared to correctly detect a marijuana odor from inside. Another, Florida v. Harris, concerns an "alert" given by another dog named Aldo while being led around a truck that contained methamphetamine ingredients.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

All of these cases could well be dwarfed in public attention should the Supreme Court review any or all of a half-dozen cases concerning same-sex marriages.

Several address the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, which requires the government to deny benefits such as Social Security payments to gay and lesbian couples. even if they live in states that allow same-sex marriage.

A federal appeals court in Boston said that requirement should not stand. Paul Clement, a former U.S. solicitor general who last term argued against the healthcare law, represents defenders of DOMA while his opponent in the healthcare case, Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, wants DOMA to be invalidated.

Also awaiting review is a lower-court decision striking down California's ban on same-sex marriage, known as Proposition 8.

The Supreme Court is expected to announce this fall whether it will accept any of these cases. Decisions would likely come by the end of June, before the court's usual summer recess.

Meanwhile, the court may also weigh the constitutionality of a provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that requires states with histories of discrimination to get U.S. Department of Justice permission before changing election procedures.

"We're seeing an increase in voting suppression," said Scot Powe, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin and former clerk for Justice William O. Douglas. "If they take a Voting Rights Act case, the betting money is that they will invalidate the preclearance provision. That's a big deal."

Caption contest Eric Schmidt

Did you honestly think Eric Schmidt went all the way to Seoul just to launch the Nexus 7 for South Korea, hang out with Samsung's JK Shin and moan about the patent war with Apple? Of course not. The Google chairman also found some time to learn the legendary "invisible horse" dance with PSY, the charismatic oppan in the Korean chart-topper Gangnam Style. While Google Korea was happy to supply a few photos, the only video we could dig up was a surprisingly short one hosted by Daum -- it's embedded right after the break.

Brian: "Man, not being the CEO of a multinational corporation sure is hard work."

Terrence: "I see you are a fellow disciple of the Carlton Banks school of dance."

Don: "Gangnam Style, 2012-2012."

Billy: "This song is really about the time I set my socks on fire. I see you still have yours. One moment."

Edgar: "Hm... I think we forgot the horse."

Richard Lai: "PSY, please Google+ me when this comes out on Dance Central."

Dan: "Doenjang Girls, would you like to buy a Nexus 7? It's wayyy more expensive than a latté."

Darren: "Soooo glad this guy put this video on YouTube and not Vimeo. $$$$$$$$"

Jon Fingas: "Oppan Google sty-- no, even I can't go that far."

#026: How to Lead in Turbulent Times [Podcast] | Michael Hyatt

It?s no secret that the last four or five years have been challenging from an economic, technological, and global perspective. In this episode, I discuss five actions leaders must take in order to lead well in turbulent times.

A Ship on a Turbulent Sea

When I speak publicly on this topic, I call this presentation, ?Shift: Leading in Turbulent Times.? I use the word ?shift? for two reasons:

  1. The world seems to be shifting under our feet.
  2. We must also shift if we are going to lead well.

Click to Listen

While I was the CEO of Thomas Nelson (2005?2011), we experienced three significant changes:

  1. Change #1: The Great Recession
  2. Change #2: The Digital Revolution
  3. Change #3: The Social Media Revolution

Your industry has probably gone through massive change as well. Over the last few months, I have spoken to a vareity of groups representing several different industries:

  • The Telecommunications Industry has gone through a massive shift to smart phones and wireless communications.
  • The Mortgage Industry has gone through a massive shift in federal regulation and lending practices.
  • The Media Industry has gone through a massive shift to digital delivery and direct-to-consumer marketing.

And, of course, the phenomenon of social media has impacted every industry. And, if that weren?t enough, you are probably experiencing massive change in your own life.

  • Maybe you?re going through a tough time in your marriage or dealing with the aftermath of a divorce or even the death of a spouse.
  • Maybe you?ve been laid off and are struggling to find work. Perhaps you are under-employed or just launching a business.
  • Maybe you had a health crisis and are dealing with the impact on your family and career.

Or maybe it?s quite so massive but still change?perhaps you are newly married, just had a baby, or received a promotion. Regardless, we are living in a world of unprecedented change. To lead well in this kind of environment, you must take five specific actions.

  1. Action #1: Shift your perception. You must acknowledge reality. This is the new normal. We?re not going back. At the same time, you must remain confident that you will ultimately prevail. In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins refers to this as ?The Stockdale Paradox.?
  2. Action #2: Shift your intention. You can?t resist change; you must embrace it. This means taking the initiative?going first?and leaning into it. How you approach change as a leader will determine how your organization approaches it.
  3. Action #3: Shift your direction. In turbulent times, it is easy to lose your vision. You just stop talking about the future. However, your people need to know there is a future and their actions matter.
  4. Action #4: Shift your acceleration. You must recover a sense of urgency. Your responsiveness can be a competitive advantage, particularly if you are a small organization with big competitors.
  5. Action #5: Shift your allocation. Unlike the federal government, you can?t fund new programs without defunding old ones. You have to shift your resources away from unprofitable programs to profitable ones.

Extreme climate change linked to early animal evolution

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? An international team of scientists, including geochemists from the University of California, Riverside, has uncovered new evidence linking extreme climate change, oxygen rise, and early animal evolution.

A dramatic rise in atmospheric oxygen levels has long been speculated as the trigger for early animal evolution. While the direct cause-and-effect relationships between animal and environmental evolution remain topics of intense debate, all this research has been hampered by the lack of direct evidence for an oxygen increase coincident with the appearance of the earliest animals -- until now.

In the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature, the research team, led by scientists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offers the first evidence of a direct link between trends in early animal diversity and shifts in Earth system processes.

The fossil record shows a marked increase in animal and algae fossils roughly 635 million years ago. An analysis of organic-rich rocks from South China points to a sudden spike in oceanic oxygen levels at this time -- in the wake of severe glaciation. The new evidence pre-dates previous estimates of a life-sustaining oxygenation event by more than 50 million years.

"This work provides the first real evidence for a long speculated change in oxygen levels in the aftermath of the most severe climatic event in Earth's history -- one of the so-called 'Snowball Earth' glaciations," said Timothy Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry at UC Riverside.

The research team analyzed concentrations of trace metals and sulfur isotopes, which are tracers of early oxygen levels, in mudstone collected from the Doushantuo Formation in South China. The team found spikes in concentrations of the trace metals, denoting higher oxygen levels in seawater on a global scale.

"We found levels of molybdenum and vanadium in the Doushantuo Formation mudstones that necessitate that the global ocean was well ventilated. This well-oxygenated ocean was the environmental backdrop for early animal diversification," said Noah Planavsky, a former UCR graduate student in Lyons's lab now at CalTech.

The high element concentrations found in the South China rocks are comparable to modern ocean sediments and point to a substantial oxygen increase in the ocean-atmosphere system around 635 million years ago. According to the researchers, the oxygen rise is likely due to increased organic carbon burial, a result of more nutrient availability following the extreme cold climate of the 'Snowball Earth' glaciation when ice shrouded much of Earth's surface.

Lyons and Planavsky argued in research published earlier in the journal Nature that a nutrient surplus associated with the extensive glaciations may have initiated intense carbon burial and oxygenation. Burial of organic carbon -- from photosynthetic organisms -- in ocean sediments would result in the release of vast amounts of oxygen into the ocean-atmosphere system.

"We are delighted that the new metal data from the South China shale seem to be confirming these hypothesized events," Lyons said.

The joint research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the NASA Exobiology Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Besides Lyons and Planavsky, the research team includes Swapan K. Sahoo (first author of the research paper) and Ganqing Jiang (principal investigator of the study) of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Brian Kendall and Ariel D. Anbar of Arizona State University; Xinqiang Wang and Xiaoying Shi of the China University of Geosciences (Beijing); and UCR alumnus Clint Scott of United States Geological Survey.

Contractor chosen for Washington Monument repair

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The National Park Service named a Massachusetts contractor Wednesday to repair the Washington Monument's earthquake damage, though it may take two more months before work begins at the National Mall site.

Perini Management Services Inc. of Framingham, Mass., beat out two other bidders to win a $9.6 million contract that includes extensive repairs to the monument's stonework. It will involve building massive scaffolding around the 555-foot-tall monument, sealing cracks inside and out, repointing the mortar, cleaning the exterior and strengthening weak spots with metal brackets.

The total cost of repairs, including work already completed, is $15 million.

Federal officials said the contractor's parent company, Los Angeles-based Tutor Perini Corp., was the prime contractor for the construction of the Ronald Reagan Building, Washington's largest federal building. The contractor's team also includes firms involved in a restoration of the monument completed in 2000.

"We are again one step closer to getting this important landmark reopened to our visitors," said Robert Vogel, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks.

The marble and granite obelisk has been closed to the public since a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook the region on Aug. 23, 2011. The upper portion of the monument sustained large cracks when it shook violently during the quake. It will likely remain closed to visitors until 2014.

At a gift store nearby, visitors still ask why the monument is closed and when it will reopen, a worker said.

Maryann Albert, a nurse from Philadelphia, was riding her bicycle with her husband near the monument Wednesday but didn't know it was still closed.

"I keep thinking, one of these days I should come down and go up in it," she said.

It would help to have a sign explaining the monument to George Washington is closed, she said. Instead, yellow tape at the base reads "Police Line: Do Not Cross."

The monument normally has about 700,000 visitors a year who ride an elevator or climb stairs to the top.

Park service project manager Michael Morelli said gaining access to the tall monument is the most difficult portion of the project. The repair work is relatively easy.

The park service may add extra metal brackets to some stone panels that are similar to those that cracked to provide extra support in case of a future earthquake.

Within about 60 days, work will begin at the site to start building scaffolding. That alone will take four to five months, said Brian Labbe, who will serve as construction manager for Perini Management.

Scaffolding also will likely be built inside the monument's top pyramidion, where some of the worst damage was found.

Once work begins, the project will take 12 to 18 months to complete, officials said.

Congress allocated $7.5 million to pay for part of the repairs. In January, Washington businessman David Rubenstein pledged another $7.5 million.

The monument was completed in 1884 and was the world's tallest structure until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was built. Vogel said it remains the tallest freestanding stone structure in the world.

"The monument," he said, "is one of a kind."

Email: Half Life 3 will be a platform ? Malstrom's Articles News

Posted by: seanmalstrom | September 24, 2012

In one of your recent blog posts, you talked about how Half Life 3 will become a platform. The fact of the matter is that it already is.?

?

Half Life 2 isn?t just a game. It is also a showcase of the Source engine that was introduced in 2004. When you go ask a hardcore gamer why Half Life 2 is good, they?ll talk about things like realistic physics, awesome scripted scenes, breathtaking graphics, and other things directly pertaining to the engine?s capabilities. Many of Valve?s other games (Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike Source, Left 4 Dead, Portal). Even non-shooters like Alien Swarm and DOTA 2 can use it. Not only does it make developing games much easier for Valve, but for community modders whose games can provide profit for Valve.

?

My guess as to why Half Life 3 is so constantly delayed is because they are still working on the new Source Engine 2.0. The rumors of Half Life 3 being an open world puzzle game might confuse valve fans at first, but in this context, it makes a lot of sense. After all, how did Half Life 2 show off the engine?s capabilities? By throwing in a bunch of physics puzzles utilizing the Gravity Gun. For Valve, the main goal of Half Life 3 isn?t to be the next big PC game, but to push forth the next big engine.

?

In this sense, Half Life has become sort of a platform. Just as the HD twins try to push PC junior gaming and just as Steam tries to push kinder and gentler DRM, Half Life 3 will be trying to push the next Source engine. There?s nothing wrong with wanting to show off a new engine, but Half Life is the only series and intellectual property that Valve has ever made on their own without any help from modders. And if the financially uneducated community modders of Steam eat up the new Source engine, it will be they only one they?ll ever need to make.__________________________________If Half-Life 3 is to showcase the new Source engine, then we should expect to see many different game-types of the engine being used. I?d laugh my ass off if Half-Life 3 was a series of mini-games or mini-scenarios wrapped up in the Half-Life 3 ?story?.People might ask, ?Why are you concerned about this, Malstrom?? I want game companies to have ambition but that ambition should be directed to wowing gamers with the best gaming experience ever. During the golden eras of gaming, this was the ambition. Today, it has changed. Too many game companies? ambition revolves more about marketing an engine or creating another revenue stream. I still have found nothing superior in generating consistent cashflow from video games than in making ambitious games that deliver fantastic new experiences.Gaming needs more ambition. And ?ambition? for the business. That?s actually bad business. I know many people in the game industry are admirers of Steve Jobs. Apple?s ambition doesn?t translate as ?new revenue streams?. When game companies do this, they are seeing us not as people but as ?masses?.

Game companies have all become little IBMs! Valve Corporation might as well be IBM Gaming. Video game revolution is the mother of the computer revolution. And what is a fantastic video game than something that overthrows dead culture?

Gaming, where is your ambition? Where is your spunk? Where is the revolution?

US Apple Retail Stores reportedly set to launch personal pickup for iPhone 5 starting tonight at 10pm

US Apple Retail Stores reportedly set to launch personal pickup for iPhone 5 starting tonight at 10pm

If you still haven't managed to secure an iPhone 5 for yourself or someone close to you, the online orders feel like they'll take forever, and the lineups are completely unappealing, good news -- it sounds like US Apple Retail Stores are preparing to start offering personal pickup. 9to5Mac's Dan DeSliva has the story:

We are hearing Apple expects to launch its in-store product reservation system, Personal Pickup, for iPhone 5 tonight at 10 p.m. Eastern. Customers can use the Apple Store app or website between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly to pre-purchase available iPhone 5 inventory for the next day. Because customers are actually purchasing the iPhone, they will have upwards of two weeks to pick up the phone (when it becomes available).

Sounds remarkably civilized. Anyone planning to give it a go?

Brady, Patriots lead Ravens 27-21 after 3 quarters

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Tom Brady completed 23 of 31 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown, and the New England Patriots took a 27-21 lead over the Baltimore Ravens after three quarters Sunday night.

Brady engineered a go-ahead drive midway through the third period, with Danny Woodhead scoring on a 3-yard run. That 12-play, 80-yard march offset a 7-yard touchdown scamper by Baltimore's Ray Rice on the opening series of the second half.

Brady had given the Patriots a 20-14 lead with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Julian Edelman with 2 seconds remaining in the first half. Brady's late heroics overshadowed a nice comeback by Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco, who threw two second-quarter TD passes after being held without a first down in the opening period.

On the drive culminating in Edelman's score, New England benefited from two defensive penalties and Brady hitting Wes Welker for a 28-yard completion.

In the first quarter, Brandon Bolden scored his first NFL touchdown and Stephen Gostkowski kicked two field goals as the Patriots took a 13-0 lead.

New England frustrated the Ravens until they finally put together their first sustained offensive series, a 13-play drive that ended with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Flacco to Torrey Smith, who was playing less than 24 hours after the death of his 19-year-old brother.

With 1:47 remaining in the half, Flacco found Dennis Pitta along the right sideline for a 20-yard scoring pass. Pitta leaped over safety Steve Gregory, caught his balance to remain in bounds at the 7-yard line and gave the Ravens the lead.

The game was billed as a rematch of last year's AFC championship contest, won by the Patriots.

New England went ahead 3-0 midway through the opening period, using a 59-yard pass from Brady to Welker off a no-huddle play to set up the score. After Baltimore's Ed Reed made a jarring hit in the end zone to deny Edelman a touchdown catch, the Patriots had to settle for Gostkowski's 37-yard field goal.

The completion to Welker allowed Brady to move past Hall of Famer Joe Montana (40,551 yards) and into 12th place on the NFL's all-time list for yards passing.

On the first play of the ensuing Ravens series, Flacco was intercepted by Gregory, who stepped in front of Pitta and returned the pick 36 yards to the Baltimore 6-yard line. Three plays later, Bolden burst in from the 2 for a 10-0 lead.

After another three-and-out by Baltimore, Brady moved the Patriots 60 yards in 11 plays, culminating in a 49-yard field goal by Gostkowski. The drive was helped by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who flopped on Brady after the quarterback went into his slide on a 7-yard scramble.

Baltimore finally broke through on a drive that carried over into the second quarter. Flacco capped the 82-yard march with the scoring pass to Smith in the left side of the end zone.

Pitta's TD reception put the finishing touches on a 92-yard drive. Flacco was 4 for 5 for 67 yards on the 10-play march.

Smith rejoined the team following the death of his brother, Tevin Chris Jones, in a motorcycle accident in Westmoreland County, Va., late Saturday night. Smith was informed of his brother's passing at the team hotel shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday and left the Ravens to be with his family.

Before the game, a moment of silence was observed for Jones, whose picture was placed on the replay screens at the stadium. The Ravens also asked the fans to observe a moment of silence for former NFL Films president Steve Sabol.

iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S vs iPad 3 vs Android: Benchmark review

iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4S vs iPad 3 vs the other guys: Benchmarks

For some, simply knowing the new [iPhone 5] is twice as fast as the last iPhone is enough. But some of us want numbers. We want to know how much faster. Sure, Apple typically brings experience to a spec fight, but it's the specs that drive the experience. It's the engine in the meticulously appointed car. It's the stats behind the championship team. It's the science behind the art.

So with that in mind we ran the iPhone 5 through a whole battery of benchmarks, and to give it some context we put it up head to head, device to device against the iPhone 4S, iPad 3, and added in scores for the Samsung Galaxy S3 and a sampling of other competing phones.

Here's the results:

Environment

Pulling a device out of the box and running benchmarks is fine but it doesn't necessarily give real world results. Odds are the first thing you'll do is load up your iPhone 5 with the usual suspects - apps, games, contacts, calendars, reminders, music, video, etc..

So for this test I restored an iCloud backup to my iPhone 5 that's already on my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S so they're both loaded with tons of the same data. It seems a little more practical than comparing it straight out of the box. All devices were also running the iOS 6 public release candidate.

As a preface, the only thing I did before performing any of these benchmarks was close out all apps from the multitasking tray. At the time either the benchmarking app was the only thing running or Safari in order to obtain the benchmarks.

Geekbench

When it comes to Geekbench, we used the iOS app Geekbench 2 in order to benchmark. Higher numbers are better in this instance. Geekbench looks at all kinds of information across the entire system resulting in an entire system benchmark. Included data is integer, floating point, memory, and stream performance. Geekbench takes all these scores and gives you an average for the entire system.

iPhone 5

iphone 5 geekbench results

The iPhone 5 scored between 1500 and 1650 each time we ran the rest. The average of 5 consecutive tests was 1615. We performed the test after killing every app and hard rebooting the device.

iPhone 4S

iphone 4s geekbench results

Just like the iPhone 5, before performing benchmarks I made sure to kill everything from the multitasker and do a hard reboot. After 5 consecutive tests, the average was around 635. Much lower than the iPhone 5 when it comes to system benchmarks.

iPad 3

ipad 3 geekbench results

The iPad 3 outperforms the iPhone 4S but doesn't come close to the iPhone 5 in terms of Geekbench results. Our average result on Geekbench was around 750 after 5 consecutive tests. All apps were closed except for the Geekbench 2 iOS app and a hard reboot was performed.

The A5X processor obviously performs significantly better than the iPhone 4S' standard A5 but when it comes to the A6, the iPhone 5 wins each and every time.

Other devices

If you're wondering how it stacks up against other devices that have been benchmarked using Geekbench, here are some reference numbers from some popular non-Apple devices on the market.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III - 1543
  • Motorola Droid Razr M - 1480
  • HTC One X - 1821

Sunspider

While Geekbench looks at your system as a whole, Sunspider will exclusively measure Javascript performance on your device via a test done through your web browser.

In the case of Sunspider, a lower number is better since it's measuring your device's response time in milliseconds for each test. After running each test 5 times, Sunspider will give you an average number of time (in milliseconds) that it took your device to complete the test.

iPhone 5

iphone 5 sunspider results

I ran Sunspider on my iPhone 5 three times and each time I ended up around the 915 to 920 ms mark. While running the test I had no other app open on the device other than the native Safari browser.

iPhone 4S

iphone 4s sunspider results

Just like the iPhone 5, we ran the rest three times on the iPhone 4S will nothing open but Safari and after another hard reboot. All three tests resulted in a time of around 1800 ms.

When it comes to rendering Javascript, it's quite obvious the iPhone 5 can handle it and process it almost twice as fast as the iPhone 4S can.

iPad 3

ipad 3 sunspider results

Same routine as before, after a reboot and Safari being the only app open, the iPad 3 faired better than the iPhone 4S with an average score of around 1450 ms. It isn't a huge difference when it comes to rendering Javascript and probably not one that many users would even notice.

When compared to the iPhone 5, the A5X chipset can't hold its own against the A6 any longer. It's obvious the iPhone 5 is an all around faster device when it comes to system and rendering benchmarks.

Other devices

Here's some average benchmarks for other popular devices on the market and how they score with Sunspider on average. Remember, the lower the number the better.

  • Samsung Galaxy S 3 - 1442
  • HTC One X - 1735
  • Nokia Lumia 900 - 6800

HTML5Test.com

HTML5Test.com does nothing more than measure how well your browser supports and handles HTML5 content. While it isn't as in-depth as tests like Sunspider and Geekbench, it's still worth taking a look at.

iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, & iPad 3

HTML5Test for iOS

Considering the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPad 3 all run the same version of iOS and support the same native Safari browser within it, all three devices scored a total of 360 points plus 9 bonus points. HTML5Test.com uses a 500 point scale.

Other devices

HTML5 Test on other devices

Here's how a couple other devices stacked up when it came to HTML5 compatibility and support.

  • Blackberry 10 - 447 plus 10 bonus points
  • Windows Phone 8 - 300 plus 6 bonus points
  • Android 4.0 - 280 plus 3 bonus points

The Senate shuttered the Capitol soon after sending President Barak Obama stopgap spending legislation that will make sure the government won't shut down on Oct. 1. It passed early Saturday morning by a 62-30 vote.

Left behind for a postelection session is a pile of unfinished business on the budget and taxes, farm policy and legislation to save the Postal Service from insolvency.

The GOP-controlled House had beat its retreat Friday morning after taking one last, futile slap at Obama ? passing a bill entitled the "Stop the War on Coal Act." The measure, dead on arrival in the Senate, was aimed at boosting the coal industry in its battle against new environmental regulations while hurting Obama's political prospects in coal states like Ohio and Virginia.

RECOMMENDED: 'Fiscal cliff'? 'Sequester'? Your guide to Congress's code language.

The Democratic-controlled Senate's middle-of-the-night session came after a spitting match between Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and the chamber's Republicans over Reid's insistence on advancing legislation by Sen. Jon Tester of Montana to boost access to public lands for hunting and fishing. Tester is perhaps the Senate's most endangered Democrat and Republicans protested that he was being given special treatment in a nakedly political move to boost his reelection chances. The measure eventually cleared a procedural hurdle on a sweeping 84-7 vote.

The votes came at midnight to give senators who had scattered from Washington time to return. Democrat Claire McCaskill was in Missouri Friday for a debate, while Michael Bennet, D-Colo., had been in the southwest portion of his state to attend a ceremony celebrating the new Chimney Rock National Monument. Tea party star Marco Rubio, R-Fla., was venting his frustrations with American Airlines on Twitter.

The only must-do item on the get-out-of-Dodge agenda was a six-month spending measure to fulfill the bare minimum of Congress' responsibilities by keeping the government running after the current budget year ends on Sept. 30.

The spending measure permits spending on agency operating budgets at levels agreed to under last summer's hard-fought budget and debt deal between Obama and Capitol Hill Republicans. That's 0.6 percent increase from current spending rates, which represents a defeat for House Republicans, who had sought to cut about 2 percent below the budget deal and shift $8 billion from domestic programs to the Pentagon.

Reid also relented to a months-long demand by tea party Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., for a vote on suspending foreign aid to the governments of Libya, Egypt and Pakistan. Paul only got 10 votes. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., however, won sweeping approval of a nonbinding resolution supporting steps to make sure Iran doesn't develop a nuclear weapon.

It's the earliest pre-election exit by Congress from Washington since 1960, though lawmakers will return in November after the election to deal with its stack of unfinished work.
