Heather Fell thinks Great Britain can land two medals in today?s women?s modern pentathlon. World modern pentathlon champion Mhairi Spence is a strong medal hope for Team GB (Picture: PA) The Beijing silver medallist is backing Mhairi Spence and Samantha Murray to continue the nation?s proud tradition of winning women in the sport as well as emulate the extraordinary success of British female athletes at these Games. As well as Fell, Georgina Harland took bronze in 2004 and Steph Cook won gold 12 years ago. But 29-year-old Fell, Katy Livingston and Freyja Prentice were not selected this year. Fell, who has been working as a commentator, said: ?I spoke to the team coach Jan Bartu and he says it is down to 15 girls for the medals, out of 36 in total. Samantha Murray has already got off to a winning start in the fencing (Picture: Reuters) ?But I?d say there are ten who can win one and that very much includes our girls. ?I didn?t make the team and so I hope they can go on and win medals for us. They?re good enough to make the podium.? Fell also believes Spence will be buoyed by home support as she takes on fencing, swimming, riding and then the combined event ? running and shooting. ?She?ll take great confidence from the crowd,? said Fell. ?She?ll be very strong against weaker fencers and has lost a bit of weight, which will help for the run.? Murray, 22, is a relative newcomer in comparison and Fell believes she too can bring home a medal. ?I think we?ll see an Olympic record in the pool and Sam can be right up there with a personal best,? she said. ?It will be interesting to see how she gets on in front of a home crowd but she can definitely win a medal, as Mhairi can.?
