Afterfall Insanity

BootHammer Video Game Reviews is excited to reveal our full review and final thoughts on Afterfall: InSanity. ?It is a survival horror video game developed by Intoxicate Studios and published by Nicolas Entertainment Group. Following a devastating nuclear fallout you?ll find a destroyed city full of hidden mystery. It also features exciting gameplay inside the shelter and amongst the city ruins, and you?ll feel symbolic meaning once you step foot outside of said shelter. Special effects, boosted via the Unreal Engine technology, make Afterfall: InSanity a truly unforgettable experience.

Imagine if you blended up different elements from Dead Space, Alan Wake and Eternal Darkness and then threw in your own unique spin into the mix. This is what Afterfall: Insanity has pulled off and we are all pleasantly surprised with the game?s offerings.

Afterfall: InSanity is set twenty years after World War III in 2032 which was between Nazi Germany, The United States, and the Soviet Union. This uneasy truce was not to last, and by 2012 the world is experiencing the horrors of a nuclear war. To survive the nuclear holocaust, humankind fled from the contaminated surface to find safety in vast bunkers, cities created deep underground. Decaying shelters and hideaways set the stage in mankind?s struggle for survival where they battle horrible mutants, bloodthirsty mercenaries and other threats. The protagonist is Albert Tokaj, a mysterious psychologist who is chosen a part of a team of medical scientists in charge of monitoring the fugitives? mental stability in the underground bunkers which hold more darker secrets than the growing madness of its inhabitants.

Your venture starts off fairly slow but maintains a steady pace as it introduces you to Albert Tokaj, the local psychologist. As you will find out, Albert?s own state of sanity is questionable from the beginning and his loss of sleep and gritty horrific lifelike dreams raise all kinds of questions. As standard, the game launches a introductory tutorial detailing controls and his nifty PDA which can hack into locked areas. You get get to browse the premises somewhat at this stage and everything looks and runs very solid. They have utilized the Unreal-3 engine very well. Shortly after a brief exploration of this new strange world Albert grabs a drink with a fellow co-worker (after receiving a mysterious video transmission) and you finds himself in a combat situation and running for safety. There is quite a bit of melee combat in the game and a variety of weapons are spread across each area. The weapons can range from pipes, crowbars, guns and my personal favorite?the fireman ax.

The excellent music score highlights the dramatic survival horror experience. The soundtrack intensifies the dark atmosphere, which is sure to evoke goose bumps and enhance the tension. Be sure to utilize your surround sound system or gaming headphones for this adventure.

While either sprinting or fighting, you have a stamina bar. Attacking and defending depletes this so it?s something you have to pay attention to. Another fighting mechanic to AI is the Fearlink system. Depending on Tokaj?s current state of sanity, his abilities will either be enhanced or lessened to an extent. This can be caused by sudden violent scenes or being sequestered in dark and claustrophobic areas surround or possibly occupied by horrific enemies. Tokaj?s PDA changes will change colors to signify his current level of fear. Higher fear will impede his shooting abilities, but the adrenaline boost to survive makes Albert more reactive and his melee swings even stronger.

Afterfall: Insanity

Avid gamer who enjoys the old nostalgic titles as much as the newest releases. Remakes of old classics are my absolute favorite. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each console, especially when the creators give the game an artistic edge. I've been lucky enough to start out on the NES and watched as the industry and technology behind it evolve. I"m psyched for the next generation consoles and what is possible.
