Alcatel Idol X hands-on (video)

Alcatel Idol X handson video

Alcatel converted its One Touch Idol line from a duo to a trio with today's launch of yet another set at Mobile World Congress: the Idol X. While not quite as thin as its 6.45mm-thin Idol Ultra sibling, at 7mm thick with a tiny 2.4mm bezel it is definitely is about as small as a 5" set can get. The Idol X's giant 1080p IPS display is fantastic to look at and Jelly Bean is snappy driven by a quad core MediaTek MT6589 1.2GHz CPU. Like many of Alcatel's other sets the range of config option varies by market and the same is true here as we'll see both 13 and 8-megapixel variants -- both with 1080p front facing cameras -- and dual or single-SIM, with the single variety getting a bonus microSD slot. While the Idol X is not equipped with LTE it does have 42Mbps HSPA+ connectivity, quad-band GSM and offers dual-band UMTS in both 900MHz / 2100MHz or 850MHz / 2100MHz frequencies.

Alcatel's all about mass market, it isn't chasing the likes of Apple or Samsung but rather is quite happy to simply make "devices for people." So while 2012 marked its first foray into smartphones, judging by what we've seen so far in 2013 from them it seems they've nailed affordability while maintaining a surprising amount of quality, a great combination. Join Myriam just after the break for a quick video tour.

GM selects AT&T LTE for future car connectivity

AT&T 4G LTE

AT&T and General Motors have just announced plans to bring LTE to a wide range of its cars starting in 2014. The partnership will enable GM to provide a whole host of new connected car services through its subsidiary, OnStar, across models from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. The connectivity will be built in at a basic level of the car, integrated into the electrical system and wired to an external antenna to provide better coverage and speeds. Some car models -- usually in the higher end -- have had this functionality for some time, but not on the wide scale that GM is targeting.

GM envisions streaming media content available in back seat entertainment devices, real-time navigation updates and application downloads for infotainment systems. The embedded LTE connection will not only bring a whole host of integrated car services online, but also provide Wifi hotspot functionality for other devices that users bring with them to the car. Hopefully as this service hits the main stream other car makers can follow suit.

Prosecutor urges trial for Costa cruise ship capt

ROME (AP) ? An Italian prosecutor has formally requested a manslaughter indictment against the captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which crashed into a reef off Tuscany last year, killing 32 people.

The prosecutors' office in Grosseto also wants Capt. Francesco Schettino to be tried for causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship while the frantic evacuation of passengers and crew was still being conducted. A judge must decide whether to order a trial for Schettino and five others named in the indictment request Monday.

Prosecutors also said Costa Crociere SpA, the Italian cruise company, has asked for a plea bargain agreement which, if it was accepted, could see Costa pay a ?1 million ($1.35 million) fine.

The ship went aground off the Italian island of Giglio during a publicity stunt.

Man who took Toronto Mayor to court over conflict of interest should pay $100,000-plu

Man who took Toronto Mayor to court over conflict of interest should pay $100,000-plus legal bill, Rob Ford?s lawyer says

Rob Ford?s lawyer ask for Mayor?s legal bill to be paid by Paul Magder | Posted Toronto | National Post

In court documents, Mr. Ford?s lawyer Alan Lenczner argues that the request for $116,044, including related fees, is ?entirely reasonable,? noting that Paul Magder had asked the mayor to pay his lawyer?s bill after he won round one of the legal fight, to the tune of more than $125,000 for lawyer hours alone.

Justice Charles Hackland ruled last year that Mayor Ford broke provincial law and should be ousted for voting to overturn an order he reimburse donations made by lobbyists and a company to his football charity. The city?s integrity commissioner had deemed those donations to have been improper.

Clayton Ruby and associates represented Mr. Magder pro bono, but after winning the initial application asked the mayor to cover their costs, which totalled $150,746 with disbursements and HST.

Judge Hackland never ruled on costs and his decision was subsequently overturned by a Divisional Court, which decided the city did not have the authority to impose the sanction it did.

?Not only are the costs being sought by Ford reasonable for the application, the leave to appeal and the appeal, they were within reasonable expectation of the applicant Paul Magder,? Mr. Ford?s submissions states, because Mr. Magder bore the risk of an adverse costs award in bringing forward the application.

?Thus Paul Magder understood even before the inception of his application that, if he was successful, his lawyers would receive costs from Ford which they would keep in their entirety. He also understood that, if he was unsuccessful, he would have to indemnify Rob Ford for his costs on a partial indemnity basis but not be required to pay his own lawyers.?

Mr. Magder has not filed his cost submissions. In justifying his bill following the first judgment, Mr. Ruby pointed to the ?significant research? his team had to undertake, in part because the wording of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act is ?somewhat vague.?

Both Mr. Ruby and Mr. Lenczner claimed a rate of $350 an hour, with associates billing at a lower amount.

Usually, Ontario courts make the loser pay, but under partial indemnity, it is often 30% or 40% of what a lawyer would have ordinarily billed, according to municipal lawyer John Mascarin. He said it?s not unusual for a lawyer who offered services pro bono to seek costs from a losing party. He said Mr. Magder may argue that he should not have to pay Mr. Ford?s costs on the grounds that the case was in the public interest.

In such cases, courts often order each party to bear their own costs, said Mr. Mascarin

Members of first U.S team to top Everest reunite

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? It might be hard to conceive now, in an era of extreme sports and ultra-light equipment, but there was a time when Americans who set out to conquer mountains engaged in a pursuit that was as lonely as it was dangerous.

But four men ? Norm Dyhrenfurth, now 94; Jim Whittaker, 84; Tom Hornbein, 82, and Dave Dingman, 76 ? remember. The leather boots that stayed wet for weeks. Oxygen canisters that weighed 15 pounds. The shrugs of indifference most of their countrymen gave a half-century ago to what it would take to get a U.S.-led mountaineering expedition to the top of Mt. Everest.

"Americans, when I first raised it, they said, 'Well, Everest, it's been done. Why do it again?'" Dyhrenfurth recalled Friday as he and three other surviving members of the 1963 expedition gathered in the San Francisco Bay area for a meeting honoring the 50th anniversary of their achievement.

The American Alpine Club is hosting lectures, film screenings, book-signings and a dinner this weekend recognizing the pioneering climbers and what their feat, captured in a Life magazine cover story, came to represent in the years after President John F. Kennedy honored the Everest team with a Rose Garden reception: the birth of mountaineering as a popular sport in the U.S.

"When they were talking about a reunion three years ago, I thought, who the hell cares about that? I figured we'd just get together for some beers," Dingman said between interviews with National Geographic, Outside magazine and the Alpine Club's oral history project. "It's turned into this big event, and I'm glad it has."

Whittaker, who lives in Seattle and went on to become chief executive of outdoors outfitter Recreational Equipment Inc., was the first American to summit Everest. He and his Sherpa companion, Nawang Gombu, reached the top of the world on May 1, 1963, a decade after New Zealand's Edmund Hillary and about six weeks after another climber on the U.S. expedition, Jake Breitenbach, died in an avalanche.

Memories of how close he came to his own death on Everest ? he and Gombu ran out of oxygen on the summit and had to climb up and back without water after their bottles froze ? infused every day of his life since with gratitude and child-like wonder, he said.

"I think I will probably take it with me into my next life, if I have one," Whittaker said.

Three weeks after Whittaker's ascent, two other Americans, Hornbein and the late Willi Unsoeld, became the first men ever to scale Everest via a more dangerous route on the mountain's west side. The next day, they descended by the southern route that Hillary, Whittaker and by then, two more members of the American team, had taken to the summit.

The adventure, which included spending the night without sleeping bags or tents at 28,000 feet, made them the first men ever to traverse the world's highest peak ? and cost Unsoeld nine frost-bitten toes.

Dingman has been lauded over the years for sacrificing his own chance to scale Everest to belay Hornbein, Unsoeld and two other climbers, Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad, who had gotten stuck out in the open with them, back down to base camp.

Dingman never made it back to Everest. As a doctor in training, a Vietnam War draftee and then a physician with a young family, he never could find the time to make the trip. He said he had no regrets then and has none now.

"It would have made no difference to get two more people on to the summit, but if we had lost two or three people on the way down that would have been a very different story," he said.

Authorities think Chinese were behind cyberattack on Aspen Institute

Saturday, February 23, 2013

? The Aspen Institute is the latest U.S. organization to see some of its email accounts targeted in the purported wave of Chinese cyberattacks.

Three of the institute's estimated 350 email accounts were broken into, said Trent Nichols, director of information technology and services for the think-tank, which keeps its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and holds a strong presence in Aspen. The accounts belonged to high-ranking institute officials.

Nichols said institute President and CEO Walter Isaacson was one of the victims. He declined to identify the other two.

?Walter has made no secret about this,? Nichols said. ?His reaction was pretty much that anything he says is public knowledge, and he doesn't consider anything in his inbox privileged or confidential.?

The news was first reported Thursday night by the Huffington Post.
